This fable features Charlemagne and his brave knights, and all the characters from Ariosto.

Revised and truly new edition, it has been incorrectly described as a new edition, it is ultimately a recast edition, with some parts in first edition and better than those which preceded it, expanded with illustrations. 60 lithographic plates after drawings by Jacques Arago. The book bears for the first time a new title: Souvenirs d'un aveugle, whereas Arago was afflicted with this infirmity in 1837, the previous editions are under the title: Promenade autour du monde.

Engaged as draftsman aboard the Uranie under the command of Frayssinet between 1817 and 1820, Arago accomplished his dream of circumnavigation which he relates at the beginning of the work. This scientific voyage was decided by the government of Louis XVIII, and led the expedition from the Canaries to Brazil, then from New Holland to New Guinea and the Sandwich Islands, with considerable time spent in the Hawaiian Islands (majority of the third volume), in New South Wales and in Western Australia. The undeniable success of this voyage owes everything to Arago's pen and his talents as a draftsman, and certain plates are to say the least eccentric. On the sole merit of the narration, this travel account is unequaled, it is a colorful, living tableau, bearing witness to multiple amusing dialogues.

"Bibliothèque de la Couronne - Compiègne” stamp on the title page. Our copy, unlike those placed in the national collection when the Palais de Compiègne library disbanded, does not have the “dépôt de l'État 1891” stamp. The Palais de Compiègne library, entirely refurnished by Napoleon III, was a truly sociable venue for the emperor's guests who borrowed novels, magazines and newspapers. An entertaining hand-written loan register has been digitized by the National Library of France.
After the fall of the Second Empire, the third Republic allowed the library, which was then open to the Compiègne public, to remain for sometime, according to the memories of Jules Troubat, the former Sainte-Beuve secretary and the last librarian at the Palais. The decree of 16 January 1888 ordered the library to be permanently closed and emptied of its contents. One part of the collection - around 10,000 works - are given to the Compiègne municipal library in 1891. In March 1918, the town of Compiègne was bombed and evacuated; the books were then left open to the elements. It was not until the end of May 1918 that a librarian acting with the army evacuated the works that remained intact, but was unable to deal with the books that had suffered damage. This part of the collection will later be sorted and sold by weight.
We have only been able to find one work from the Palais de Compiègne library on public sale, a Description of Egypt auctioned in 2014.

Beautiful and rare copy, of renowned provenance, with Napoleon III's monogram and one of the rare works to have not made it to the national collection when the Palais de Compiègne library was dismantled in 1891.

The tribulations of a young English gentleman seeking his place in society and in life, the novel is a satire of human nature and Victorian aristocratic society. Publication extended over 2 years due to the author's illness, who dedicated the second volume to his doctor. Thackeray is one of the most important authors of the 19th-century English literature, along with Dickens, of the following generation.

The illustrations fall within a caricatural and 'droll' vein; they reveal Gustave Doré's immense talent, his attraction to landscape and his ease in portraying grotesque characters as well as in capturing burlesque scenes. 'This illustration is like no other in its powerful originality: it is Gaulish, Rabelaisian, and sparkling with wit. Doré certainly lavished the best of his talent on the Contes drolatiques. They had no success however and the entire edition was marked down. Today, it is one of Doré's most sought-after works" (Leblanc).

Our copy is enriched by a signed autograph letter of three pages Antony Thouret to his publisher Ladvocat in which it is particularly question a second edition of the book which will be enriched with a second preface, some scenes main and a quantity of interesting notes.

The battles on Kawanaka island took place in 1550-1560 between two shoguns: TAKADA Shingen and UESUGI Kenshin. TAKEDA ruled over Yamanashi. UESUGI ruled over Nagano. Both regions are located west of Tokyo. The 2 shoguns fought 5 or 6 times on the island without being able to defeat each other. The island is situated in the course of the Shinano river. The drawings contain particularly expressive battle scenes, on horseback, on foot, with lance or sword, often bloody, with decapitation or mutilation.

A work of great darkness, Little Dorrit is Dickens's second novel of three political and social novels. It is a denunciation of Victorian society obsessed with wealth and power. G. B. Shaw would judge the novel "More seditious than Karl Marx's Capital". One of Dickens's great works.

L'Étoile du Sud is an adventure novel by Paschal Grousset, sold to publisher Hetzel, then reworked and signed by Jules Verne. The action takes place in Griqualand in South Africa where mining engineer Cyprien Méré conducts organic chemistry studies on diamond deposits. He succeeds in creating a synthetic diamond, the black star, which many will seek to appropriate.

Illustrated edition by Robida, first printing with 49 plates (8 in color, 35 in camaieu and 6 in black), and numerous text illustrations (approximately 600).
Publisher's polychrome illustrated boards signed Souze and bound by Engel. Special gilt and blue plate on red ground. Spine similar. Rear board with a half-timbered house in a central roundel and blind angular cornerpieces.
Front board of first volume very good, that of the second with a 1cm diameter stain, and soiling to the upper part of the black border. Lower corners bumped, others rubbed. A tear to the spine of the first volume. Headcaps rubbed, those at head turned in. Soiling to rear boards. Scattered and unevenly distributed foxing. Some leaves sprung.
Despite flaws, a handsome copy overall of this rare binding.

First edition illustrated with 43 plates including a frontispiece and a title-frontispiece (all plates are bound consecutively, after the preliminary pages, half-title, title page, preface and table of contents). MCCCXXXVII on title page. The plates bear no captions; the first 27 have pagination at bottom of page, the following bear no indication and appear to be before lettering (with pencil pagination notation). Our volume possesses several features attesting to the very first printing: Line 29 p. 260: "holding"; p. 341 line 1: "inbe-licate"; p. 342 line 5: "S. Veller"; p. 432 the F of Posthumous papers of is poorly printed. The engraved title is in second state with Tony Weller's name above the porch, the first state having simply Veller.
Contemporary full black sheep binding. Smooth spine decorated with 3 blind tools, one gilt tool and multiple fillets. Double fillet frame on boards. One tear at head. Overall very rubbed with scratches on boards. 2 corners cut, the other 2 bumped. The errata leaf, frontispiece and engraved title bear old restoration tape on inner margin, the errata leaf also has two smaller ones laterally. All engraved plates have browning all around the engravings, the frontispiece and engraved title being covered with it. The outer margin of the frontispiece has been torn away. All printed pages are very clean unlike the engravings, the paper being very different.
The posthumous papers, as with all Dickens's works, first appeared in parts from April 1836 to November 1837, then in volume form. Written by a 24-year-old Dickens, the work propelled the writer into a glory from which he never descended. The reception of the work was immense and very popular; it was claimed at the time that only the Bible and Shakespeare's works exceeded The posthumous papers in circulation.

Doctor Louis Caltat was charged in 1888 with a scientific exploration mission to Madagascar by the Ministry of Public Instruction. He traveled 8000 km during three voyages. Upon his return, he wrote this book very rich in descriptions, covering customs, geography, peoples, commerce... This voyage had originally appeared in the famous review Le tour du monde over several issues.

Adventure novel set mainly in Australia whose heroine is a woman searching for her missing husband. The original title of the novel was to be Lady Franklin, as Jules Verne wished to write a tribute to all women in general and to Sir John Franklin's wife in particular, who devoted her life to finding her husband who disappeared on the path to conquering the North Pole and also devoted her entire fortune to this cause, unfortunately in vain.

Fourth and best edition of this famous collection of costumes. Graesse,VII, 267: "This new edition reproduces exactly all the costumes figured in the first three, but this time drawn more correctly by M. Seguin and engraved on wood by M. Huyot". It contains 513 plates of costumes engraved on wood in various frames; the text itself in Renaissance-type frames. The whole is printed on fine wove paper. Each double page has a costume and its caption opposite in Italian and French.

It was in 1590 that Vecellio published his collection of costumes (ancient, medieval, Renaissance) from all nations. The subjects were redrawn and re-engraved for this enterprise, Firmin Didot explains this in his "Notice on the fourth edition". This is obviously an iconographic source of primary importance for the history of costume and fashion.

The depletion of stock while the new chosen bindings would be those "Au globe doré" surely led to these small modifications, very rare and curious for the collector.

It was in 1888 that James Tissot had a sort of mystical crisis; this revelation of his faith led him to Palestine and Jerusalem, from which he brought back 365 watercolors with which he created this work, a true artist's book. This religious period of his work brought him immense fame; most of the originals are in the Library of Congress in the United States, purchased in 1902, the year of the painter's death, by the Brooklyn Museum.

Commander Fernel (1793-1854) was attached to the general staff of the African army; he recounts in this work with legitimist tendencies the history of the taking of Algiers. The last chapter is devoted to the particularities of the region: date palms, sugar cane, pomegranates, camels... This campaign, as we know, would have considerable repercussions on the French presence in North Africa. At the end, the copy has been extra-illustrated with the section of L'Univers pittoresque on Algiers, written by Rozet, captain of engineers, which contains 7 steel-engraved plates.

Portrait of Mary Hamilton by Toulouse-Lautrec. This cabaret singer is here presented in full flow, dressed in men's clothes. Lautrec was fond at this time of lithographic ink, drawing simple lines full of movement, reminiscent of Japanese ukiyo-e prints.
A veritable ode to the café-concert, this series by Toulouse-Lautrec and Henri-Gabriel Ibels captures the essence of the Parisian lifestyle and the vitality of its nights. The plates are accompanied by a pamphlet by the writer Georges Montorgueil singing the praises of these establishments so wrongly looked down on, which he calls “a tonic for modern life.” Far removed from the heavy atmosphere of theatres and concert halls, these “carefree”places saw a real boom during the Belle Epoque and launched the careers of some remarkably modern artists.
The two painters here produced portraits of the most famous cabaret stars at the time, caught in the movements of their “epileptic choreographies” or the grace of their poses. The big names in cafés-concerts, including Jane Avril, Yvette Guilbert - Toulouse-Lautrec's muse - or Aristide Bruant are shown in direct and confident aspects, inspired by Japanese woodcuts. The influence of Impressionism is also discernible in the finer details – the style being in vogue at the fin du siècle. Toulouse-Lautrec had been a regular fixture at the Salon des Indépendants since 1889 and had shown there his view of Parisian high society, traversing society salons and the city's brothels as well, not to mention cabarets like the Moulin Rouge, for which he designed a poster that has remained famous to this day. Another master of posters and draughtsmanship, Ibels would work with the Éditions de l'Estampe Originale several times, including on a series of drawings of the circus. He was also the creator of numerous illustrations for popular newspapers, known for his dynamic and incisive style.

Half green shagreen binding, spine with four raised bands decorated with blind-tooled compartments with gilt fleurons at their centers, gilt dates, marbled paper boards, marbled endpavers and pastedowns.
The first work, in two volumes, is illustrated with 72 plates, the second, in one volume, with 72 plates.
Some minor foxing of no consequence.

Contemporary half brown sheep binding. Smooth spine decorated with fillets, rubbed and scuffed. 2 holes at foot. Uncut copy, the leaves having slightly different dimensions. Some plates browner. Occasional light foxing. A dampstain in the middle of the upper margin on the first 12 leaves, fading.
Projects executed between 1828 and 1845 by architects of the period (Visconti, Dubois, Morey, Durand...). Each construction comprises about 4 plates of plans and sections. Farms, Houses, Schools, kiosks, chalets, cottages... One can distinguish a clear tendency toward historicism and exoticism with numerous borrowings, moreover very diverse.

First edition illustrated with a frontispiece and 159 plates drawn and engraved by Normand fils. A second part containing, in addition to the house, public buildings, would appear in 1843, then a third part in 1849 on country houses and rural constructions. A collective edition from Liège in 1849 would include these three parts, but a fourth part on interior and exterior decorations of buildings would be published in 1853. This first volume bears no indication on the title page of volume numbering or part, because undoubtedly at the time it was published, the volumes to come were not yet planned or decided upon.

Half dark brown sheep. Spine with mock-bands with three Romantic blindtools and gilt roulettes. Upper joint cracked at head and foot and rubbed. Leather tail-piece worn away, revealing cardboard. Leaves 251 and 253 detached. Scattered spotting. Covers and edges rubbed.
The work is the account of a journey by Smet, a missionary Jesuit priest, along the Colombia river, which runs from Canada to the United States. Smet undertook this voyage to the Athabasca river, arriving at Fort Augusta on the 1st January 1846. On another trip, he went back to Fort Vancouver. He finally left again in July and stopped at the mission of Saint Marie before travelling down the Missouri. The work contains a deal of information on the area of Oregon and on Native Americans, including their costumes, habits, and beliefs.
