Doctor Louis Caltat was charged in 1888 with a scientific exploration mission to Madagascar by the Ministry of Public Instruction. He traveled 8000 km during three voyages. Upon his return, he wrote this book very rich in descriptions, covering customs, geography, peoples, commerce... This voyage had originally appeared in the famous review Le tour du monde over several issues.
