First edition large octavo illustrated with 64 drawings by Roux including 12 polychrome out-of-text engravings with blank verso. Publisher's Hetzel binding signed Engel called "à l'éventail et à un éléphant avec titre dans l'éventail", lighthouse spine, first cover with gilt scientific instruments in the foreground, three gilt illustrations and green foliage, second cover of Engel "i" type according to Jauzac, all edges gilt. Original blue endpapers marginally lightened as usual, first hinge very slightly cracked. Posthumous novel, Le Volcan d'or takes place during the gold rush period and features two Franco-Canadian cousins inheriting a concession on the banks of the Klondike. Handsome copy in very fresh condition with pristine binding.
