Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

  1. Estudos de cartographia antigaEstudos de cartographia antiga
Manuel Francisco de Barros e Sousa de Mesquita de Macedo Leitão e Carvalhosa SANTARÉM

Estudos de cartographia antiga[Studies in Ancient Cartography]

    Alfredo Lamas, Motta & Cie|Lisbon s. d. [1919-1920]|16.5 x 23.5 cm|2 volumes reliés

A substantially posthumous publication, prepared by Ayres de Sá from the notes and papers of the second Viscount of Santarém (1791–1856), who, in addition to his diplomatic and political roles amid the turbulent struggle between Marianist and Miguelist factions in Portugal, was the first historian to develop the study of cartography in a methodical manner.

The work is illustrated with 97 plates in the first volume and 40 plates in the second.

Cherry half-shagreen bindings with corners, spines with five raised bands framed by black fillets and showing some rubbing, marbled paper sides, a scratch to the left margin of the upper cover of the first volume, endpapers and pastedowns...

De l'Amérique et des Américains, ou Observations curieuses du philosophe La Douceur, qui a parcouru cet hémisphère pendant la dernière guerre, en faisant le noble métier de tuer les hommes sans les manger[On America and the Americans, or Curious Observations of the Philosopher La Douceur, Who Travelled through that Hemisphere during the Late War, Practising the Noble Profession of Killing Men without Eating Them]

    Samuel Pitra|[Lyon] • Berlin 1772|11.5 x 18 cm|Broché

    New edition.

Our copy is preserved in its original temporary binding, with marbled-paper wrappers. (cf. Sabin 6327.)

Marbled-paper spine lacking, abrasions to the marbled-paper covers, and a dampstain to the upper left corner of the volume, gradually diminishing through the text.

We follow the attribution given by Hoefer and Sabin for this uncommon pamphlet, a critique of the theories of Cornelijs de Pauw. Its authorship remains uncertain: Pierre Poivre (1719-1786) has been proposed, as has Antoine-François Pernety (1716-1796), probably through confusion with his Dissertation sur l'Amérique et les Américains of 1769; both attributions continue to find favour...

    Imprenta Elzeviriana|Santiago de Chile [Santiago [Santiago]] 1899|13.6 x 19 cm|Broché
