Publisher’s brick-red cloth binding in the so-called “Ptolemaic Sphere” design, one of Souze’s most harmonious binding compositions, bound by Engel; upper cover decorated with a special plaque designed by Souze, lower cover of type b with central rosette and darkened corner palmettes; brown endpapers characteristic of the first edition; all edges gilt. 

Scattered foxing. One lower corner bumped, minor rubbing to the upper cover along the joint, lower cover darkened and with a few small stains.

This volume was the first to appear in the trilogy Les grands voyages et les grands voyageurs; it is devoted to overland voyages and discoveries.
