First edition illustrated with 177 drawings by Gustave Doré, including vignettes, plates, headpieces... All engraved by Maurand, Sarglat... Fine printing on large white laid paper. Title page in red and black. Contemporary half red morocco binding with corners in long grain. Smooth spine richly decorated with large romantic tools in compartments. Triple fillet rule on boards. Original wrappers preserved. Rubbing to joints, headcaps and edges. Corners bumped and slightly turned. Joint fragile at tail of upper board. Fine copy, with very white paper free from foxing. This fable features Charlemagne and his brave knights, and all the characters from Ariosto.
