Fine first cover with well-marked and brilliant gilding (small black spots in a thin area). Clean spine with clearly readable gilding. The 2 bottom corners slightly bumped. Headcaps worn. Back board very good. Light scattered foxing more present on the first leaves, rather discreet thereafter. Handsome copy.
Le Chancellor, initially published in 1874 is a maritime adventure novel inspired by the raft of the medusa. Martin Paz is set in Peru. One of Verne's only titles dealing with discourse on races and hatred of mixed race, the hero being an Indian in love with a Jewish woman.
