Finden was a famous English engraver who illustrated numerous books under his celebrated name, on the navy or regions of the United Kingdom, costumes... The excellence of his technique brought steel engraving to the highest level. One can clearly see in this work the subtle gradations, depth and fineness of rendering. This keepsake is a beautiful testimony to romanticism in the decorative arts.

First French edition of the Account of the Capture of His Majesty's Ship Bounty translated by Daniel Lescallier. It is illustrated with 3 maps, including one of the voyage in the launch, one of the islands discovered by Lieutenant Bligh, and one of the coasts of New Holland.

Captain Woodard was held prisoner by the Malays on the island of Celebes for two years and five months; his testimony was collected by Vaughan in England while the captain was making a stopover. Describing his captivity and adventures, he also reports on the food, fauna and flora, customs and practices of the natives. In the appendix, several very remarkable accounts of shipwrecks: loss of the frigate La Pandore, loss of Captain Kenedy's vessel, account of the black hole...
The Account of the Capture of His Majesty's Ship Bounty relates its voyage and the famous mutiny. After a six-month stay in Tahiti and a cargo of breadfruit trees, the revolt broke out on board on April 28, 1789; the captain and 18 of his men were forced into a drifting launch, with only ship's biscuits for food. After 48 days of navigation, this meager crew landed at Timor with all hands. Christian Fletcher, one of the lieutenant's mates, and 24 other men remained on the Bounty. William Bligh attributes this unexpected revolt, according to him, to the life the men found in Tahiti, and the desire to return to a gentle life far from the discipline of an English ship. Cinema would find in this maritime story eloquent symbols to exploit: youth against authority and blind and arbitrary repression, freedom... Christian Fletcher would establish a colony with some of his men on Pitcairn Island (the others having remained in Tahiti); in all likelihood, they killed each other and only one survivor remained.

A virtuous father versed in the arts decides, after acquiring a cottage in an idyllic location, to take care of the education of his 4 children aged 12 to 14. Each episode illustrating a feeling or quality (Self-esteem, benevolence...) is a story intended for moral education: meeting a beggar, a worker, a student... The collection would have quite great success and takes up Rousseau's precepts of education in the countryside.

This Roman history manual was printed and published by order of the king "For use by pupils of the military school". It takes up the entirety of Roman history in short chapters. It was in 1789 that an unfinished project was realized, "The spectacle of Roman history", which contained 40 engravings. Other engravings were commissioned to complete the ensemble in 1805 and create this Abridgment of Roman history. The illustration is particularly beautiful and varied.

Jacques-Pierre Maygrier (1771-1835) was a student of Antoine Dubois, the obstetrician of Empress Marie-Louise. He practiced at the Cochin hospital and at the Hôtel Dieu and lectured extensively on obstetrics with the intention of simplifying the teaching of the subject (e.g. on the anatomy of the fetus, the mechanics of birth, etc.).
A very attractive copy of this rare and magisterial atlas of obstetrics in a remarkable strictly contemporary binding.

The novel bears the subtitle Mémoire d'un médecin, the whole forming a cycle of 5 novels more or less sequential, as Alexandre Dumas always proceeds: La comtesse de Charny, Le chevalier de Maison-Rouge, Le collier de la reine, Joseph Basalmo. These novels are all set during the French Revolution period.

My Prisons are the memoirs of a man incarcerated by arbitrary power. Following the Neapolitan and Piedmontese revolution against the Austrian occupier, all personalities including Silvio Pellico were imprisoned for ten years at Spielberg in Moravia. The text achieved great success once published due to its pious character, Pellico having found hope only through the Catholic religion. The work also contains poetry.

Quérard, in his France littéraire, reports regarding this work that it would not truly be the work of Las Cases but of an English or Irish clergyman who would have sold his work to the latter who would have published it upon his return to France; in any case this world atlas (map of Asia, Oceania, America) is a compilation, the maps naturally not being by Las Cases, and the author drew from various works to compose his own. This atlas was reprinted several times and continued, but although provided with more maps (which one could purchase additionally), these reissues no longer concern exclusively the world under the Empire and are therefore less specific. The geopolitical Europe of 1802/1804 is not the same as that of 1822 or 1831, and it is the same for the United States. Besides the maps of the five continents, one can distinguish a map of ancient Greece, of the Roman world...

One notes the presence of Balzac's text: Physiologie des boulevards, two texts by Sand and one by Musset. The other collaborators being celebrated litterateurs of this period, Edouard Ourliac, Frédéric Soulié... At the beginning of the work, Lavallée's text on the geography of Paris (which was also present at the beginning of le Diable à Paris). At the end of the work, statistics of Paris, the work always wanting to be both entertaining and informative. In this regard, all the texts, satirical or not, of the work are more or less of journalistic character, but as journalism was then practiced under the Second Empire. The work concludes with the statistics of Paris.

Half red shagreen, spine decorated with compartments, fillets to covers, spines uniformly sunned. Corners bumped. Rubbing. Faint spotting to silk-paper guards of first volume and occasionally to margins near silk paper guards, but overall a very fresh copy.
