Second edition written under the collective pseudonym of Monsieur de Fongeray and illustrated with a lithographed portrait of the so-called de Fongeray by Henry Monnier, which is actually nothing other than a portrait of Stendhal, for according to Charles Asselineau: "We have it from M. Henry Monnier that the supposed portrait of M. de Fongeray is nothing less than that of Stendhal slightly caricatured".
Half raspberry calf bindings, smooth spines decorated with gilt and black fillets, gilt friezes at head and tail, marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, marbled edges, handsome unsigned contemporary romantic bindings
