Romantic Bindings (1820-1850)

New edition, expanded from the novel entitled Amélina, épisode de la conquête et de la colonisation des Espagnols dans l'île d'Haïti (Tours, 1841), which comprised only the first narrative.

The following two, set respectively in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, are by a certain A***, who has not been identified.

Very rare first edition (125 copies printed according to Quérard) of this remarkable exposition of Talma’s dramaturgical principles, still regarded as a “revolutionary” actor despite his immense success (his friendship with Napoleon never wavered); the text was inserted the same year, 1825, at the beginning of the new edition of the Memoirs of Henri-Louis Caïn, known as Lekain (1729–1778), who was still considered in the early nineteenth century as one of the greatest tragedians of the eighteenth century.

Nepveu in 1815, in six small octavo volumes, illustrated with 54 hand-coloured plates depicting twelve views, more than sixty different costumes, monuments and various picturesque scenes, including bullfights, most of them after drawings made in 1809 and 1810. Cf. Colas 439; Lipperheide 1214, the latter reference still requiring direct verification in the printed bibliography; Brunet I, 1226, no. 3; Quérard I, 506. The title itself calls for the 54 plates and records the recent origin of many of their designs.

First edition, limited to 1,100 copies, divided into four fictitious editions within the same year, in order to create the illusion of commercial success. These were subsequently reissued with a new title-page bearing an edition statement and the author’s name, together with a volume designation on the half-titles (cf. Clouzot). Our copy carries the designation “third edition.” Contemporary bookplate traces on the upper pastedowns. A collection of twelve volumes comprising the complete eight-volume Collection des petits classiques françois, published under the direction of Charles Nodier and Nicolas Delangle, together with four contemporary works belonging to the same literary and publishing milieu. The original series was dedicated to the Duchesse de Berry and printed using the types of Jules Didot the Elder. The present set is numbered 17 and is one of 25 copies on Dutch paper, following 6 copies on Chinese paper and preceding 500 copies on extra-fine paper.

Edition translated by Defaucompret. Each volume has an engraved title accompanied by a vignette and at least 2 steel engravings per work (all on strong laid paper), the animated scenes are by Tony Johannot, the views are English engravings. 23 folding maps heightened in colors.
