Romantic Bindings (1820-1850)

Collection assembled by an anonymous hand of chromolithographs and engravings. Numerous pages with various frames, Gothic and ornamental, intended to receive engravings. Frontispiece in chromolithography heightened with colors. The papers intended to receive drawings, engravings or chromos are of various colors: blue, green, cream, pink. The collection ends with music sheets that have remained blank.

Copy with the cipher of Marie Amélie d'Orléans, wife of Louis-Philippe, who also used a simple monogram for bindings from the time he became king. Some of the almanacs were directly bound by the publisher for the royal family, these copies often bear simple marks, the publisher not having the stamps belonging to the sovereigns. Nothing formally attests however that this is a copy for Marie Amélie d'Orléans, it is on the other hand certain that this copy was intended for a member of the royal family whose M is the first name. The very rare first edition.

Full glazed red calf bindings, smooth spines ornately decorated with gilt vegetal motifs, black calf title labels, gilt tooling on the headcaps, frames of quadruple black and gilt fillets enhanced with gilt fleurons at the corners on marbled paper boards, pink paper endpapers and pastedowns slightly soiled at margins, all edges gilt, gilt fillets at head and tail of leading edges, contemporary bindings.

Some light rubbing to boards, some minor foxing.

A handsome and rare copy of this work dedicated to his friend Béranger bound in an elegant contemporary Romantic binding.

Contemporary full brown straight-grained morocco. Smooth spine decorated with large Romantic tools with date at foot. Covers with large blind Greek key border and gilt fillet frame. All edges gilt. Decorative gilt board-edges. White watered paper endpapers. Spine uniformly sunned, turned brown. One corner rubbed. Several gatherings browned. Handsome copy nonetheless, in contemporary morocco.
