A precious complete set (10 volumes for the first series and 7 volumes for the second) of this handsome children’s periodical (cf. Gumuchian 2211).
Gumuchian describes it as "extremely rare".
For bibliographers of children’s books, the collection is complete in two series, whose union, as here, comprises 17 volumes.
According to the collation of the copy described in the Catalogue des périodiques de la Bibliothèque nationale (II, 383), the second series would extend to volume IX, dated 1851. The work is illustrated with 214 plates in black or in two tones, drawn by Louis Lassalle and lithographed by him with the assistance of Cattier.
Thus, the first series is illustrated with 130 lithographic plates hors texte (13 per volume), and the second with 84 lithographic plates hors texte (12 per volume).
Bindings in full burgundy calf, smooth spines slightly lightened and decorated with gilt Romantic arabesques, gilt rolls at head and tail, double gilt fillets framing the boards, which are ornamented with gilt corner fleurons, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, some corners rubbed, gilt edges at head and tail of the boards; uniform Romantic bindings of the period.
Some scattered foxing and occasional dampstaining; losses at the foot of a few pages in volume 6 of the first series, without affecting the text.
The literary contributions bring together many of the leading figures of post-Romantic children’s literature: J.N. Bouilly, Charles and Fanny Richomme, Eugénie Foà, Léon Chrétien, Louis Guérin, Anna des Essarts, Gustave des Essards, Ernest Fouinet, Alfred Désessarts, Charles-Malo, B. Poujoulat, Jacques Arago, Eug. Nyon, Léonide de Mirbel, Louise Leneveux, Elise Voïart, etc.
Volume 2 of the first series contains a text by Baptistin Poujoulat on "Moeurs des Turcomans" and another by Victor Séguin entitled "Deux esclaves d'Alger".
A rare copy, complete and preserved in a uniform Romantic binding of the period.
