A staunch advocate of Christian education, which he considered indispensable in a society he believed corrupted by the study of pagan authors, Jean-Joseph Gaume wrote several works for children, which were published by his brothers. 

This guide to First Communion, written from the perspective of an American missionary, first appeared in 1836, one year after Du Catholicisme dans l'éducation, ou l'Unique moyen de sauver la science et la société, the first work in which the author set out his conception of religious education.
