First edition of the Voyage pittoresque à l'Île-de-France, au Cap de Bonne-Espérance et à l'Île de Ténériffe, published in Paris by Auguste Nepveu in 1812 and printed by Le Normant. Two octavo text volumes with an accompanying atlas. The second text volume contains three folding tables; the atlas in the present copy comprises 45 engraved plates, both single-page and folding, including three maps and 42 plans and picturesque views, most retaining their tissue guards.

First duodecimo edition, or first edition in 12mo format, illustrated with five fine plates by Eisen, including two in the first volume and one frontispiece in each of the remaining three. Title pages printed in red and black. As expected, the first volume has no half-title, unlike the other three volumes.

Contemporary full mottled calf binding. Smooth spines richly decorated. Tan morocco title and volume labels. Blue sprinkled edges. Small loss at the head of volume III, short wormtrack at the head of volume I, rubbing marks. Loss to the lower margin corner of the final leaf of volume I. A handsome copy.

First edition of this major eighteenth-century classic of scientific recreations, illustrated with 72 folding plates, 68 of them finely coloured by hand at the time of publication, together with a folding table. Four further plates listing the prices of recreational apparatus sold by Guyot accompany the first three volumes. The first two volumes appeared in 1769 and the remaining two in 1770.

Rare first edition of one of the most remarkable Dutch emblem books of the seventeenth century, illustrated with an engraved title bearing the device "SPE ET METU" and fifty-one emblems designed by Adriaen van de Venne and engraved by the artist himself together with Willem van de Passe, Johannes Gelle, Christoffel Le Blon the Elder, Albert Poel and Jan Gerritsz Swelinck.

Although the title page bears the imprint of the Amsterdam bookseller Jan Evertsz Cloppenburgh, the volume was printed in Middelburg by Hans van der Hellen, in Johan de Brune's native city. The first edition is thought to have comprised...

Some of the memoirs had appeared in 1773, but the collected edition that brings them all together is indeed dated 1774; certain pieces are dated 1773 as they were added after the title page bearing the 1774 date. Although the pagination varies, the collection contains only one general title page; some memoirs have half-titles, others do not.

On the verso of the front free endpaper, a manuscript note referencing the life of Saint Jerome by Colombey, concerning the life of a blind philosopher.

Pastiche Bradel-style binding in waxed, speckled beige paper, typical of the period. Contemporary brown sheepskin title label. Untrimmed copy, with full margins. From p. 190 onward, a faint angular water stain appears and continues through to p. 204; otherwise, a clean and bright copy.

Rare first edition. Published in Avignon according to Barbier; however, J.-P. Perret records it as printed in Yverdon.
Contemporary full marbled and polished calf. Smooth spine gilt-tooled. Tobacco-colored morocco labels for title and volume numbers. Lacking head of volume I. Upper joint of volume II split at head. Volume number label on volume I rubbed. Two bumped corners on volume I. In volume II, faint waterstain from title page to p. 60. Otherwise, a clean and well-preserved copy. A good example overall.

The title label reads "Memoire de Torcy" while the title page is anonymous, so the author of these anonymous memoirs must have been well known at the time. Light rubbing. The half-titles of volumes II and III are not present, as in all copies we have consulted, so it is possible that they are not actually missing, and that there was only one half-title for the entire work.
