Engraved frontispiece title-page by Dubrayet, out-of-text portrait of César de Nostradamus engraved in copperplate, 253 coats of arms, 2 medals and 1 vignette engraved on wood in the text, text surrounded by a black fillet. Beautiful engraved frontispiece title with allegories of Aix, Arles, Avignon and Marseille. Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Spine with raised bands decorated with 5 small fleurons. Tawny sheep title label. Blind fillet frame on covers. Rubbing and surface wear. Paper uniformly yellowed. Faint dampstain in lower margin pp. 1 to 245. Lack to upper corner of frontispiece, in margin. Brown stains on leaf a in margin. Light scattered dampstains. The first work of importance on Provence, the work is written in a sustained, sometimes baroque style. Despite inaccuracies in certain genealogies, this history remains precious for all the events of which César de Nostradamus was a direct witness, notably the troubles of the League in Provence. César de Nostredame was the son of the famous astrologer and physician, he occupied himself mainly with poetry and L'histoire de Provence is his major work.
