Foreign Literature

Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great ModernsOur Great Moderns
Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

First edition of the translation and free adaptation by Madame Riccoboni.
Contemporary full blonde marbled and glazed calf binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Red morocco title-label. Traces of rubbing. 2 corners slightly bumped. A strip of discoloration at the top of the upper cover. Title page of the second part shorter at lower margin. Leaves 197 to 203 of the last part are shorter at upper margin. Good copy.
19th-century armorial bookplate of the Bauffremont family, illustrious family of feudal nobility originally from Lorraine, with its two mottos: Dieu ayde au premier chretien and Plus de deuil que de joye.
In the preface, the translator apologizes for her poor knowledge of the English language, a dictionary and a grammar having little helped her understand difficult passages, so she freely adapted many passages, the novel having become a hybrid composed by two authors, Fielding and Riccoboni. One will therefore not find the humor and satire so present in Fielding. Amelia is the last of the 4 novels written by Fielding. It tells the story of Amelia and Captain William Booth after their marriage.
