First edition of the French translation by François Boissier de Sauvages of this work originally published under the title Haemastaticks in 1733. Our copy is complete with its folding plate at the end. A page from the Cramer bookshop catalogue is bound at the rear. Contemporary binding in full blonde speckled sheep, spine with five raised bands richly decorated with gilt compartments, tooling and fleurons as well as a red morocco title label, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, all edges red. A lack to head of spine and scattered rubbing. A pale dampstain to inner margin of some leaves. This treatise examines, following the research of William Harvey and Marcello Malpighi, blood circulation. It is in this work that Hales relates his experiment on arterial pressure using one of his inventions, the ancestor of the sphygmomanometer.
