    The monumental and erudite enterprise of Louis Ellies Dupin, professor of theology and philosophy, the Histoire des controverses et des matieres ecclesiastiques was published successively from 1690 to 1718 and extended from the 9th century to the 17th, with several volumes for certain centuries (it is very rare to find the different volumes together). Besides the specific subjects treated, controversies and councils, this history contains a history of the popes and the church, and summarizes all the authors and writings; the work is further distinguished by its abundant tables: a chronological one, one of authors, works, acts and letters, and finally one of councils. The whole forms a rich source of precise information.

    Rare edition printed in Villefranche, after the original of 1671 published in Paris. Work attributed to Bernard de Montfaucon but whose authorship is disputed.
    Binding in black half-shagreen, late 19th century. Jansenist spine with raised bands, with title and date. Trimmed short on title page.
    Bernard de Montfaucon, originally from Roquetaillade, near Limoux, was one of the most erudite men of his time and thereby one of the most famous of his era, notably for his monumental work: antiquity explained in figures. He was a Benedictine, of the congregation of Saint Maur. The abbey of La Trappe, founded by the order of Cistercians was annexed to the domain of the Benedictines. It was reformed in the 17th century according to 'the rule of strict observance' by the abbot de Rancé, much more rigid and severe than that of the Cistercians. It is precisely this reform that Bernard de Montfaucon comments upon, a reform which breathed new spiritual life into Christianity, and which saved the abbey of La Trappe from the oblivion and decadence into which many abbeys fell at that time.

    Jean de la Noë-Mesnard (1651-1717). Friend of the Oratorians, he was a member of the Saint-Clément community. From a merchant family, trained as a jurist, he became famous for his teaching (giving conferences every Thursday at the Saint-Clément presbytery). Theologian, editor of the 1689 diocesan catechism (a question-and-answer catechism adopted by several dioceses and introduced by the Jesuits in China), he organized courses in Holy Scripture at the Seminary. In 1695, the bishop - another Mgr de Beauvau - additionally appointed him superior of the Saint-Clément community whose Jansenism concerned him. The proclamation of the bull Unigenitus against Jansenism would disrupt the Nantes clergy and the Oratorians would be forbidden to teach, La Noë-Mesnard was suspected. He would die a few years later.

    Contemporary full calf binding. Spine with raised bands, decorated. Red morocco title label. Foot headcap worn. Mascaron's orations were compiled by Abbé Bordes in 1704. The work contains a biography of the Bishop of Agen and the orations for Anne of Austria, Henriette of England, the Duke of Beaufort, Pierre Séguier, Turenne. Mascaron was a famous Oratorian born in Marseille in 1634. "His funeral orations, which make him one of the great orators of the royal pulpit, were highly appreciated by Mlle de Scudery, Mme de Sévigné, Fléchier and the king. Powerful, epic inspiration (for Turenne). Pathetic apostrophes, ample metaphors, strong antitheses and accumulative syntax. Mascaron is the typical representative of high religious but also courtly eloquence" (D. Declerq.)

    First editions of these 5 texts concerning Jansenism and Parliament. The collection forms a rare ensemble.

    To understand the significance of these editions, it is necessary to go back a little in history: The papal bull Unigenitus (1713) takes up and perfects the various bulls against "Jansenist heresy" by particularly condemning the theses of Quesnel and Arnauld, it would give rise to a religious dispute in France that would gradually worsen into a major political crisis over confession tickets and refusal of sacraments to those who opposed the bull. Not only would the French clergy be divided, but Parliament itself would go on strike and oppose the king in this matter, who had ordered the application of the bull. The confrontation between parliament and the king would last more than 20 years. The bull Unigenitus gave new vigor to a moribund Jansenism, thus causing the opposite effect.

    Two theses were published in 1696 by Jesuits of Reims on the doctrinal preeminence of Molina concerning grace, and announced it as dogma for the Catholic church. Concerned about the danger these theses posed to the church and the theological university of Reims, the Archbishop of Reims thought it wise to study their content and expose it. This theological quarrel illustrates the latent conflict between the Jesuits and the prelates of the Catholic church.

    Fulgentius (468-533), is famous among the Church Fathers for his pious and exemplary life; he was first a monk, then abbot and subsequently bishop of Ruspe in Tunisia, then under the rule of an Arian king. Besides his epistles and his reflection on true faith, Fulgent's work is recognized for his combat against Arianism, and the sectarianism of his time such as Pelagianism and Nestorianism.

    Examination, by Father Ange de Raconis of the predictions contained in Dumoulin's works, namely the relegation of Protestants to the Indies, the disappearance of the so-called reformed religion, that the name Huguenot would become synonymous with Devil... Father Dumoulin is famous for his controversies and his total adherence to his church, but his character clearly influenced his rhetoric, and violent in his diatribes he found himself attacking in turn the Catholic church and then his own. Raconis attempts here to disqualify Dumoulin's discourse and character.

    L'antiquité dévoilée is a book by Baron d'Holbach based on manuscript notes by Boulanger, not counting the important reworking that d'Holbach made to the notes, developing their anti-religious spirit. The work had a strong impact at the end of the 18th century, it aimed to prove that among all peoples of the earth, the population had been kept under the yoke of superstition and terror inspired by the different religions of the world. The author methodically proposes the analysis and examination of the theses and ideas developed by d'Holbach. He establishes a parallel with the system of the Economists (Materialists) and Rousseau. The relative impartiality of the author illuminates in an unexpected way the theses of the materialists and d'Holbach.

    First edition. The first two volumes appeared in 1755 and the last, by abbé Jean-Baptiste Cadry, dates from 1757. Cadry indeed completed this work that M. de Caylus had left unfinished due to his death in 1754. Not held by the British Library and absent from English catalogues.

    Beyond the precisely theological criticism (Incarnation, Trinity...) the first volume contains numerous details on heresies. The work should be classified in a library of Jansenism, whose vision of human nature (close to Calvinism, fatalistic) could not have accommodated that of father Berruyer, a Jesuit. The work illustrates the quarrels not only theological but ontological between Jansenists and Jesuits.

    Otto Aicher (1628-1705), Benedictine and professor, was an Austrian playwright, professor of rhetoric and grammarian, but also a historian. In this book he gathers epitaphs from all periods, notably of Roman emperors and kings, the whole constituting a theatre of death as epitaphs are like voices from beyond the grave, the epitaph being the last sign that the dead leave to posterity. Very interesting for measuring the relationship to death throughout history. Brunet I, 118.

    Handsome Renaissance binding in full glazed brown calf with spine in four compartments, boards formed of a central rectangle divided at its center and decorated with leafy designs, rich frieze framing the rectangle composed of musical angels, a flutist, a drummer and decorative elements. Slits for the placement of ties (now missing). Upper headcap restored, and minor various restorations (edges, corners and endpapers...). One volume, small octavo, unpaginated and unfoliated.
    Haymo was a Benedictine priest of the 9th century (he died in 853), after having traveled, notably to Tours, and exercised different functions, particularly teaching at the monastery of Fulda, he was appointed abbot of the monastery of Halberstadt. He was a prolific writer and most of his works are commentaries on the holy scriptures, as with the book we present which concerns the epistles of St. Paul. Following in this the exegetical tradition of his time, Haymo was not an original commentator, and his ideas are drawn from the church fathers, but his position tends to accentuate the profoundly moral and mystical character of the texts he comments upon, and his works have the interest of reflecting the century in which he lived.

    Collection composed of 12 Latin poems on the liberal arts, human existence, and happiness, each corresponding to a sign of the zodiac. Due to the criticisms the book contains about the church and the pope, the 1531 edition was banned and the Inquisition kept a watchful eye on Palingenius's activities, until he was condemned to the stake. The 11th book deals with astronomy, and the 12th sets forth a theory of light that would be partly followed by Giordano Bruno. Marcellus Palingenius is the anagram of Pietro Angelo Manzolli.

    Famous pamphlet, particularly violent, against the book by Barthelemy de Pise which highlighted the similarities between the life of Jesus Christ and the life of Saint Francis. The book begins with a preface by Conrad Badius and Martin Luther, very insulting towards the Papists and Cordeliers. The work is in Latin and French, it reprises the hagiographical account of Saint Francis while adding footnotes and extremely severe and virulent criticisms. More generally, the book is a direct attack against Catholics by Protestants, accusing them of heresies, abominations, satanism... « Car il (ce livre) est tel, que quand hommes et diables dégorgeraient leurs poisons exécrables tous contre Dieu, ils n'en sauraient plus dire qu'un moine seul en a osé écrire » (For it [this book] is such, that when men and devils would pour out all their execrable poisons against God, they could not say more than what one monk alone has dared to write) Conrad Badius.

This is undoubtedly the first time that the foetus, or premature babies, were considered as living beings. It is striking to note that it was religious thought that led to reconsidering embryology through its conception of the living being

    Year by year, the work establishes the list and history, rather objectively commented, of important facts in ecclesiastical history in the 18th century, and this throughout the world. The revolutionary period is particularly interesting. The whole is very rich and diverse, containing missions in China, forbidden books as well as theological quarrels.

    Although it is charged with numerous inaccuracies (but certain points of Suger's biography are still debated), like all studies conducted by Gervaise, this history of Abbot Suger teems with interesting details and anecdotes. Moreover the preliminary pieces contain 4 dissertations on the foundation of the abbey of Saint Denis, the death of Abbot Suger, on Suger's works, and on the heresy of investitures. Few works deal with the life of Suger, this history therefore remains important.

His commentaries and his ardent defense of the faith under cover of great eloquence were much appreciated.

    Initially a magistrate then diplomat, Nicolas de Buzenval (1611-1679) received the diocese of Beauvais in 1650 where he showed great diligence and profound rigor, developing policies favorable to the poor. He quickly took up the cause of Jansenism and opposed Rome's ability to dictate conduct to a French bishop.

    Asterius or Saint Astere was bishop of Amasie, in Pontus, in the 4th century; we have remaining from him sermons and homilies. The 5 homilies present in this work concern avarice, wealth, and whether it is permitted to leave one's wife for any cause whatsoever. François de Maucroy was a friend of La Fontaine, and the latter submitted everything he wrote to him; likewise, there exist manuscript leaves on La Fontaine's appreciation of this work by Maucroy. An article from 1931 mounted on the front endpaper recounts the history of the relationship between Maucroy and La Fontaine.
