New edition, after the original of 1704. Contemporary full calf binding. Spine with raised bands, decorated. Red morocco title label. Foot headcap worn. Mascaron's orations were compiled by Abbé Bordes in 1704. The work contains a biography of the Bishop of Agen and the orations for Anne of Austria, Henriette of England, the Duke of Beaufort, Pierre Séguier, Turenne. Mascaron was a famous Oratorian born in Marseille in 1634. "His funeral orations, which make him one of the great orators of the royal pulpit, were highly appreciated by Mlle de Scudery, Mme de Sévigné, Fléchier and the king. Powerful, epic inspiration (for Turenne). Pathetic apostrophes, ample metaphors, strong antitheses and accumulative syntax. Mascaron is the typical representative of high religious but also courtly eloquence" (D. Declerq.)
