First edition. Contemporary full sheep binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. 2 title labels. One lack to head of spine. The title on the title label is curiously and erroneously by the binder "Bibliotheque des auteurs ecclésiastiques", another work by the author and volume II, the work being naturally absolutely complete. Monumental and erudite undertaking by Louis Ellies Dupin, professor of theology and philosophy, the Histoire des controverses et des matieres ecclesiastiques was published successively from 1690 to 1718 and extended from the 9th century to the 17th, with several volumes for certain centuries (the different volumes are very rarely found together). Besides the specific subjects treated, controversies and councils, this history contains a history of the popes and the church, and recapitulates all the authors and writings; the work is further distinguished by its abundant tables, one chronological, one of authors, works, acts and letters and finally one of councils. The whole constitutes a rich source of precise information.
