First edition. Contemporary full sheep binding. Ornamented raised spine. 2 title labels. Headcaps worn. Joints cracked. The monumental and erudite enterprise of Louis Ellies Dupin, professor of theology and philosophy, the Histoire des controverses et des matieres ecclesiastiques was published successively from 1690 to 1718 and extended from the 9th century to the 17th, with several volumes for certain centuries (it is very rare to find the different volumes together). Besides the specific subjects treated, controversies and councils, this history contains a history of the popes and the church, and summarizes all the authors and writings; the work is further distinguished by its abundant tables: a chronological one, one of authors, works, acts and letters, and finally one of councils. The whole forms a rich source of precise information.
