This work was written by an American Quaker, and according to the publisher, before the French Revolution. In it, the author harshly condemns "la fourberie et le fanatisme des prêtres." He decided to publish it in support of the violently anti-clerical policies of the revolutionary governments. The book contains several references to America. Furthermore, the author challenges and refutes all the dogmas of the Church, beginning with the truth of the Bible and the Gospels, and the belief that Jesus is the son of God. Christianity and its doctrines are presented as mere superstitions serving the interests of priests.
