Very rare first edition (125 copies printed according to Quérard) of this remarkable exposition of Talma’s dramaturgical principles, still regarded as a “revolutionary” actor despite his immense success (his friendship with Napoleon never wavered); the text was inserted the same year, 1825, at the beginning of the new edition of the Memoirs of Henri-Louis Caïn, known as Lekain (1729–1778), who was still considered in the early nineteenth century as one of the greatest tragedians of the eighteenth century.

Carteret described it as an “admirable publication printed on stout wove paper [...] one of the finest of the 19th century”, comparing the quality of its production to that of the great illustrated books of the 18th century. First issue of this spectacular edition of The Imitation of Christ, published by Léon Curmer in 1856-1857 and conceived throughout in imitation of illuminated manuscripts. The volume comprises 437 chromolithographed pages, each set within a broad polychrome border heightened with gold and almost always different; facing pages are frequently designed to answer one another decoratively. Five compositions occupy a full page, and all leaves are mounted on guards. The separately published Appendix of 1858 is not present.

Very rare and highly sought-after first edition according to Clouzot, for which no copies on large paper were issued.
