New edition. According to Brunet (III, 720), all editions containing the key are foreign counterfeits. Michallet's ninth edition is generally dated 1696, and the tenth and last edition issued by the same publisher 1699; this 1697 edition bearing Michallet's imprint must therefore be regarded as a counterfeit. The first volume is in two parts, each with its own title page, the second entitled: Suite des caracteres de Theophraste, et des pensées de Mr. Pascal; a few pages further on, the subtitle reads: Ouvrage nouveau dans le goût des Caracteres de Theophrastes et des Pensées de Pascal.
Contemporary full old red morocco. Spine with raised bands, compartments decorated with small corner fleurons, roll-tooled at foot. Old red morocco title and volume labels. Single fillet border on covers. Decorative roll on turn-ins. All edges gilt. Scattered foxing.
A very handsome copy in contemporary morocco.
