    First quarto edition, third issue (distinguished by the absence of the table of contents at the end; the other two issues present this table as 28 unnumbered leaves or 42 pages), cf. Polak 7161.

    Each of the 23 books comprising the ordinance is separated from the preceding one by 8 blank leaves, likely intended for handwritten supplements or annotations, though these remain unused.

    Full tan calf binding, spine with five raised bands, gilt compartments and tooling, tan leather title label, gilt rolls on the somewhat faded caps, name of a former owner gilt-stamped on upper board, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, gilt fillets partially faded along the edges, red edges. Contemporary binding.

    Scuffing to the boards, joints restored, small tear on pages 167–68 without loss of text.

    Rare first edition, illustrated with several diagrams in the text and 3 plates of leveling instruments invented by Picard for the leveling of the château de Versailles. Edition produced by Philippe de la Hire, after Jean Picard's death, and from manuscripts found at his residence.
    Contemporary full speckled brown sheep binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Brown calf title label. 3 corners slightly bumped. Rubbing. Good copy.
    The work is divided into distinct chapters, the first being a theory of leveling in relation to the earth's surface, those that follow being an application of this theory and practical examples of leveling. One finds there for example the way to bring water to Versailles through measurements despite differences in terrain. The last part concerns the measurement of the earth. Picard had been charged by the Académie des sciences to measure one degree of meridian. The result found by Picard was the most accurate found at that time and allowed science and notably Newton to pursue his work on universal gravitation whereas he had been hindered by imprecise and faulty measurements.

    The rare first edition, long attributed to Madame de La Fayette, and published the same year as La Princesse de Clèves, then to Courtilz de Sandras and even to Pierre Daniel Huet.
    Late nineteenth-century full morocco binding signed Bellevallée glazed old red. Jansenist spine with raised bands. Wide gilt inner border. Date at foot. Very fine copy, perfectly established, with wide margins, and unwashed.
    Unlike La Princesse de Clèves, or La Princesse de Montpensier, the Mémoires de Hollande is not a historical novella, but presents itself as a novel of manners that uses modern first names. The work describes, through the love affair between a Jewish woman and a Lusignan, life in the Netherlands around the mid-seventeenth century; it is one of the few novels daring to confront reality as it is, and the work deserves to be distinguished in the invention of French romantic literature on this account. The book is of interest for the history and topography of the Netherlands. It should be noted that this work was found in the greatest amateur libraries of the nineteenth century.     The very rare first edition with 16 unsigned folding plates.

    Contemporary brown sheep, spine in compartments, headpiece and one corner repaired, wormtrack to middle of upper margin, a few insignificant wormholes. The final engraving is shaved and lacking the last lines of text from the legend. A very good copy.

    Du Verney's first work; he was renowned for his knowledge of anatomy and physiology, was tutor to the Dauphin and taught in the Botanical Gardens.

    This is the first scientific monograph on the structure of the ear and its illnesses, and is therefore very significant. It played a determining role in the understanding of this organ, whose study had been until then much neglected. Stamp of Doctor Maurice Petit of Montereau.
