La Bruyère's Characters was a dynamic work, constantly evolving. While the first edition emphasized the translation of Theophrastus's Characters, editions from the fourth in 1689 onward would include numerous additions; thus the fourth edition (the first to have been completed) contains 764 remarks compared to 420 in the first, the sixth that we offer will count 997 compared to the original 420. The sixth edition (1691) grants for the first time a privileged place to the Characters, having his translation of Theophrastus printed in smaller type and explicitly signing his work: in remark 14 of the chapter "De quelques usages," he replaces "Geoffroy D***" with "Geoffroy de la Bruyère," the alleged high-born ancestor of the author.
