Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

    Chez L'Huillier • Delaunay|à Paris 1817|13 x 21 cm|broché

Third edition statement (third reprint by the same publisher in December), the first edition having appeared the same year in November.

Contemporary temporary wrappers in bluish paper. Lacking paper on spine, with exposed signatures.

The printed copies sold quickly, with a decree condemning the work to be destroyed and the author accused. The work begins with a plea in favor of press freedom, and is primarily summarized by the demand for unity between the people and the government. The author accuses public authorities, deputies, and police of tyranny, supporting his argument with history and sound common sense.

These reflections on the customs and government of the Greeks is in fact an enlargement and deepening of a book published earlier (1749): Observations on the Greeks. Mably thus justifies this updated work in his preface: "Il m'arrive souvent aujourd'hui de louer ce que j'ai blâmé dans mes premières Observations, & de blâmer les mêmes choses que j'ai louées; c'est qu'il y a eu un temps où je regardois de certaines maximes sur la...

Edition with some parts in first edition, rare, much preferable to the 1676 original which contains only the first part; this one is therefore considerably expanded with major pieces. A frontispiece representing Saint Mark's Square in Venice. The 1677 edition contains 3 titles for each part plus an added title summarizing the whole; one will easily notice that these three parts are very rarely found together in libraries (see Oxford, Leeds...), and that they most often appear separately. There were undoubtedly several editions at this date of 1677, of which only this one contains the three parts. Moreover this edition with the sphere would suggest that it was printed elsewhere; the third...

The first flagellants appeared in the eleventh century and the movement gained renewed vigor during the Black Death in Europe, thus reaching its peak during the fourteenth century. This movement was rapidly condemned by the church as heretical and millenarian. The movement quickly became anarchic and a threat to order, both of the church and of society. This military man was appointed head of the French Household of Philip V of Spain, the first Bourbon king of Spain (from 1700 to 1703). He would receive a new mission in Spain in 1716, as extraordinary ambassador. During three essential years, everything done at court passed through him. The editions of Quintus Curtius on the life of Alexander were numerous in the 16th century. We have been unable to determine whether this was a first edition from Jean Frellon, although we have not found any earlier edition from this publisher (notably in the Aurelianensis catalogue of 16th-century Lyon editions) present only in the Edinburgh catalogue.

The Italian war constitutes an excellent narrative, teeming with picturesque details; it begins in a most romantic manner before undertaking to recount the battles of Piedmont, Milan and Turin, and the political intrigues between Spain, France, the Duke of Savoy and the duchies of Italy. The second volume, extremely rare and almost never found together with the first volume of the memoirs, appeared in 1665. To understand the significance of these editions, it is necessary to go back a little in history: The papal bull Unigenitus (1713) takes up and perfects the various bulls against "Jansenist heresy" by particularly condemning the theses of Quesnel and Arnauld, it would give rise to a religious dispute in France that would gradually worsen into a major political crisis over confession tickets and refusal of sacraments to those who opposed the bull. The preface of the work indicates that the Memoirs of Richelieu are less a single biography of Richelieu than memoirs covering the end of the reign of Louis XIV, the Regency and the reign of Louis XV. The present work claims to remedy these memoirs and present the marshal as he truly was "it is the hero in undress that we present to the public". As the title indicates, besides his historical...

This panegyric, as announced on the first page of text, was delivered by Pliny the Younger before the Senate, in the emperor's presence, when Pliny was Consul. In fact, the speech delivered by Pliny was much shorter than this one and it was written to thank the emperor for choosing him as consul; it was only later that Pliny reworked his text by expanding it historically and gave it this title. Some believe that Trajan and Pliny were close from the time of...
