Permanent Secretary of the Academy of Sciences, it was Cuvier's responsibility to compose these biographies of celebrated scientists who had been members. These were read during public sessions; the first volume brings together the speeches delivered from 1799 to 1810, the second from 1810 to 1819. The work also contains Cuvier's reception speech at the Academy as well as a preface on the future of sciences.
