First edition, handsomely illustrated with six engraved title-frontispieces and seventy plates on thick wove paper, with tissue guards, whereas most recorded copies contain only sixty; all etched by François Louis Couché and finished with the burin by Bovinet.
Bradel-style half grey percaline bindings, spines decorated with gilt fleurons and fillets, brown morocco title labels, French curl paper pastedowns.
Light rubbing to the bindings, some foxing and soiling, rather conspicuous restorations and small marginal losses to a few leaves, not affecting the text.
Manuscript ownership inscription on the half-title of each volume, in the barely legible name of a lieutenant of the 46th Regiment.
A military history of France from 1792 to 1815, covering the principal campaigns of the period: the Revolutionary Wars, the Vendée wars, the Egyptian campaign and the European campaigns of the Empire. The work treats the Revolutionary and Imperial eras as a single continuous narrative, in which the figure of Napoleon Bonaparte holds a central place. The account draws on extracts from reports and testimonies by generals, notably Lannes. The third volume, devoted to the Egyptian campaign, also contains various reports by the savants who accompanied Bonaparte.
