Mounier remained a monarchist deputy and thought that only a constitutional monarchy, following the model of England, could spread liberty and happiness to the people. In the aftermath of the revolutionary events of October 5 and 6, 1789 when the king was brought back from Versailles to Paris amid numerous pillaging, Mounier pressed for the assembly of the third estate so that it might finally give a constitution to France.
