Precious autograph inscription signed by Guy de Maupassant: « À monsieur Jules Claretie, cordial hommage. Guy de Maupassant» (To Monsieur Jules Claretie, cordial tribute. Guy de Maupassant).
Autograph inscriptions on the first edition of this text are rare, particularly in elegant contemporary signed bindings. A great admirer of his work, the chronicler, novelist and playwright Jules Claretie sponsored Maupassant's admission to the Société des Gens de Lettres on March 3, 1884. Maupassant offered Claretie no fewer than nineteen copies of his works in first edition with autograph inscriptions (Thierry Selva, Maupassant par les textes). In his famous Parisian chronicles, Claretie published these beautiful lines in tribute to his esteemed colleague: « J'aimais ce robuste au verbe clair. D'autres l'ont mieux connu : personne ne l'a plus admiré. C'était un classique » (I loved this robust man with clear speech. Others knew him better: no one admired him more. He was a classic) (La Vie à Paris, 1897).
