Some rare and light foxing, but overall paper quite white, which is very rare for this edition which is most often found foxed and browned; however some signatures tinted.
    Provenance: visiting card inserted in first volume: Vicomte de la Tour.
    One of the finest books illustrated by Johannot, with Don Quixote and one of the gems of Romantic illustration.

A few narrow cracks along the upper joint. Surface wear at bottom of upper board, 2 small ones at bottom of lower board. Both upper corners discretely restored. Copy overall quite fresh, printed on fine paper, despite some scattered foxing.
    Fine and carefully produced edition reproducing the Costes edition of 1739 for the text and notes, as well as the key to the Characters. The Discourse to the French Academy forms the final text.

    Novelist, music-hall performer and actress, a forgotten and short-lived muse of the Roaring Twenties music-hall, Colette Andris (the pseudonym of Pauline Toutey) managed to write three novels between 1929 and 1935, with a lot of autobiographical elements. She would die in the prime of life the following year. Born into an academic family, she quickly gave up the administrative and teaching careers that awaited her in order to become a nude dancer and, like her heroine Miss Nocturne, to perform in the Parisian music halls.
