The work, the author's second after "Jeux interdits", begins on February 6, 1934, the day of anti-parliamentary demonstrations outside the Chamber of Deputies in Paris that were organized by right-wing groups, veterans' associations and extreme right-wing leagues to protest against the dismissal of police prefect Jean Chiappe following the Stavisky affair.
