    Created between February 1802 and 1829 by order of Napoleon Bonaparte and published from 1809 [actually 1810], it was printed in 1000 copies on laid paper watermarked "Égypte ancienne et moderne" and offered to institutions.
    Light fold mark in upper right corner, otherwise excellent freshness and condition.

    The printed copies sold quickly, with a decree condemning the work to be destroyed and the author accused. The work begins with a plea in favor of press freedom, and is primarily summarized by the demand for unity between the people and the government. The author accuses public authorities, deputies, and police of tyranny, supporting his argument with history and sound common sense.

    Stanyan resided in Switzerland from 1705 to 1714. Haller appreciated the unbiased exposition without prejudice or value judgments from its author, whose reading he recommends. It was seeing the paucity of works on Switzerland that prompted the author to take the trouble to write his own.

    According to Brunet: "One of the best translations of Persius" (Brunet IV, 522). Nicolas-Joseph Sélis (1737-1802), man of letters and professor at the college Louis-le-Grand, replaced abbé Delille, to whom he was connected, in the chair of Latin poetry at the Collège de France in 1796. The 1677 edition contains 3 titles for each part plus an added title summarizing the whole; one will easily notice that these three parts are very rarely found together in libraries (see Oxford, Leeds...), and that they most often appear separately. There were undoubtedly several editions at this date of 1677, of which only this one contains the three parts.
