New edition, after the original published in 1690. Illustrated with 4 figures serving as frontispieces to the four books, finely engraved in etching but unsigned. Titles within frames of small engraved tools. Contemporary half speckled sheep binding, smooth spine decorated with 5 fleurons, green paper title-label with gilt title, two gilt tools slightly faded, boards covered with remarkable contemporary domino paper decorated with a decidedly modern dotted pattern, some rubbing to leather. Madame d'Aulnoy's first literary adventure, this novel belongs to the tradition of historical nouvelles whose emblematic model is the Princesse de Clèves. This collection also contains the author's first tale, L'île de la félicité, one of her only tales to have an unhappy ending. The preliminary leaves cite Moreri's dictionary under the entry Aulnoy.
