Le comte Comminge is separated from Fayel only by a half-title, just as Euphémie from Mérinval (with no loss in the collation). 3 figures in volume I, one by Eisen, one by Restou, one before letters; one by Eisen and one by Restou in volume II.
    Contemporary full mottled calf bindings. Decorated spines with raised bands, roulettes at foot. Red morocco title label, and green morocco volume label. Triple fillet frame on the boards. Gilt edges. Surface wear on the spine of volume II with a loss in the first compartment, and loss of gilding. Surface wear and loss along the lower joint of volume 2. A fairly handsome set. Quality binding.
    The 4 tragedies are enriched by numerous pieces (Mémoires du Comte de Comminge, Effets de la vengeance...). His theatre resembles his prose and seeks dramatic effects, his dramas are dark and arouse terror and tragic situations through a grand staging of emotions.

    Full grained sheep binding, late 18th century. Spine with raised bands decorated in grotesque style with 2 different motifs. Pink calf title label. Joints cracked at head. Wormholes at foot. 2 corners slightly bumped. Rubbing. Some leaves uniformly browned, others yellowed. Headcap clumsily restored. Yellow dampstain to lower right corner of first 30 pages.
    Voiture (1597-1648) was throughout his life a gallant and courtier, brilliant in salons and playing games. His epistolary talent earned him the distinction of making prose fashionable in France for a long time, and his poetry excels in the mannerist and precious tone, even though he knows how to be trivial when necessary. He is an essential figure of the literary scene of the early 17th century, a true Molière character.
    Voiture is above all a style, not only in his letters (Lettres amoureuses) and his poetry but also in his prose, see for example the delightful Métamorphoses. His works were in the image of the man, gallant, teaching beautiful language and fine manners to the habitués of the Hôtel de Rambouillet. His fame was very great during his century and he remains an emblem of the 17th century.

    Handsome esteemed edition. The first edition of this work, which was abundantly reprinted, dates from 1747. Mme de Graffigny stands, behind Zilia's letters (a young Peruvian exiled in France), against the hypocrisy of morals and the inequality of women. The Lettres d'une péruvienne is certainly one of the first feminist novels. The style follows the sentimental vein that would flourish at the end of the 18th century.

    20th-century half vellum binding with corners. Jansenist spine with raised bands. Title and date in pen. One dampstain in lower margin of pp. 241 to 256.
    Only one work remains to us from the 3rd-century Roman historian Justin, an abridgement of the Philippic histories of Trogus Pompeius; however an original work that is not just a repetition of Trogus Pompeius's work. Cantel's notes and commentaries are divided into 2 columns beneath the text. Different types are found, geographical, historical, or linguistic; Cantel cites other ancient authors whenever he believes Justin is mistaken. Although Cantel's edition did not lastingly mark the history of the text, his commentaries were taken up, notably in London and Philadelphia, for chronological references.

    Curious work in which an ape has been raised by a philosopher and finds himself the author of these letters. Poor, the philosopher Abadolf must give his daughter to his uncle residing in France, a crude merchant whose only knowledge is arithmetic. He sends with her his ape who will thus write him letters about his daughter's existence and education. His letters will be a pretext to philosophize and criticize the French spirit. The book is also a plea against natural law and against Rousseau's La nouvelle Héloïse.

    The work is a response to the book by the Protestant minister Claude, which was itself an attack on a book by Aubertin. The work of Arnaud and Nicole goes beyond the simple framework of polemic and contestation of the arguments in Claude's book; it aims to be an exhaustive treatise on the Eucharist and the mysteries of the holy mass by accumulating historical evidence, notably that borrowed from the Eastern church. Arnauld and Nicole, theologians of Port-Royal, made themselves champions of the religious quarrel against the Protestants. The Eucharist was an untouchable point of Catholic dogma; to deny it as the Protestants did was to call into question the principle of transubstantiation with the body of Christ and the possibility of grace, and to dismantle the rituals of the mass and its necessity. This is why the polemical literature on the Eucharist and grace is so important; the two churches would never cease to fuel it.

Spine browned. 2 corners slightly bumped. Browning to margins of half-title and title page, small worming in margins. Handsome copy.
    Lady Montagu was the wife of the English ambassador to Constantinople. The principal interest of these letters lies in bearing direct witness to the customs of contemporary Turkey. The accounts contained in the correspondence are fascinating; they are undoubtedly the only feminine testimony about Turkey of that time and about the countries she crossed to reach it, notably Greece and Hungary. She addresses Turkish customs but also life in harems, which she was the first European woman to enter and visit, as well as Moorish baths. Her corset was then so tightly laced that the oriental bathers were convinced it was a sort of torture instrument in which her husband had locked her. Lady Montagu not only envied the nudity of these women, a symbol of emancipation and luxury, but was also seduced by the apparent freedom of certain aspects of their lives. She also seems to have been seduced by love and amorous poetry, and she quotes verses from the sultan to his beloved. The success of these letters was such that the author was nicknamed "the Sévigné of England." Voltaire wrote a relatively favorable review of this work in the literary gazette of 1764, praising the author's erudition and culture: "There reigns above all in Lady Montagu's work a spirit of philosophy and liberty that characterizes her nation."

    Journalist, writer and Freemason historian, D'Ussieux composed these historical novellas after those of the Décaméron français, a similar work. They can be compared to those of Baculard D'Arnaud. These novellas corresponded to the public's taste for history and drama.
