The first edition of these letters met with great success and gave rise to several piracies. The authenticity of these letters was contested from their publication in 1775, which the translator defends against in the preface of this second edition, attesting to their provenance and railing against the false editions. It is however a literary hoax whose author is the Marquis de Caraccioli. The letters address very varied subjects, Italy, piety, natural sciences, solitude, etc.

Georges Blin, specialist in the works of Baudelaire and Stendhal, was an important literary critic and academic (he was part, notably with Vladimir Jankélévitch and Jean Wahl, of the jury that examined Emmanuel Lévinas's doctoral thesis, Totalité et infini, at the Sorbonne). He was also director of the Jacques Doucet Literary Library of the Universities of Paris (Sorbonne, 1961-1988), professor of the chair of Modern French Literature at the Collège de France (1965-1988) and honorary professor at the Collège de France.

The work was initially attributed to Jean Frédéric Bernard, better known for his research and compilation works such as L'éloge de l'Enfer, or Recueil de voyages au nord, rather than for his literature.
However, Octave Uzanne tells us, in his preface to the 1881 reprint, that Jean-Frédéric Bernard had died in 1752. According to him, this collection must therefore be attributed to François Bernard who published under his own name only an Analyse de l'histoire philosophique et politique de Raynàl in 1775, but who devoted himself to numerous translations from English and German. Although this Bernard is cited by Quérard, Uzanne tells us no more about "the life of this peaceful Dutchman who must have died, by all appearances, as the Revolution approached" because, he writes, "the lantern of erudition becomes a dark lantern when it interrogates such depths of obscurity." Uzanne is moreover quite critical of the literary qualities of the work for which he nevertheless prefaces a reprint, but recognizes as its principal quality that it offers "an overall view of the merchant bourgeoisie of the last century, an ideal of grey naturalism, without any of the spice of imagination, but, in sum, an exact account of the small scandals that occurred everywhere outside of France at that time."
These novellas nonetheless remain solidly constructed and well written, they are in the taste of those of Baculard d'Arnaud, with a certain humor and satire added.

Jacques-Pierre Maygrier (1771-1835) was a student of Antoine Dubois, the obstetrician of Empress Marie-Louise. He practiced at the Cochin hospital and at the Hôtel Dieu and lectured extensively on obstetrics with the intention of simplifying the teaching of the subject (e.g. on the anatomy of the fetus, the mechanics of birth, etc.).
A very attractive copy of this rare and magisterial atlas of obstetrics in a remarkable strictly contemporary binding.

The so-called Fermiers Généraux edition, using the editions of 1685 and 1696 for the text and adding tales by d'Autreau and de Vergier, present in the 1718 edition.
This edition was of 2,000 copies on vergé de Hollande paper, the present copy one of the rare copies in contemporary morocco. This copy is probably of the first issue, bearing in mind the quality of the engravings and a fleuron error on p. 240 of vol. 1, later corrected.
The work has 80 proof illustrations by Eisen, engraved by the foremost engravers of the time (Aliamet, Baquoy, Choffard, Delafosse, Flipart, Le Mire, Leveau, de Longueuil and Ouvrier), two frontispiece portraits (one of La Fontaine by Hyacinthe Rigaud and another of Eisen by Vispré, engraved by Ficquet), as well as six vignettes by Coffard, of which two to title, two hors-texte at the head of each volume and two at the head of the first tale in each volume; and 53 tailpieces.
This edition was printed at the expense of the Fermiers Généraux and is therefore known as the “Fermiers Généraux edition.” It stands out thanks to the high quality of its printing and the remarkable illustrations by Eisen (1720-1778), who made this work not only his own masterpiece, but unquestionably one of the masterpieces of 18th century illustrated book production.
Contemporary red morocco, the spines with gilt fillets and fleurons (stars), the covers with a triple frame of gilt fillets, gilt tooling to edge of covers, narrow interior gilt dentelle framing the marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. A few insignificant spots to the plates in the second volume.
This copy has a few inversions in the order of the plates in volume one, due to binder error: 257-258, index leaf, 261-262, 259-260, 265-266, 263-264, blank, 267-268.
The engravings Cas of Conscience and the Devil of Papefiguière are in the uncovered state, as are those of the Lunettes and Rossignol. The engraving of Féronde is in its pre-hat state, the plate of the Other Imitation of Anacréon in its pre-arrow state, while that of the Ailing Alix has no ornaments on the curtains, like the plate of the Remedy.
Brunet notes that the plates contained nude elements, which were then hidden by alterations to the two plates.
A very attractive copy in a rare contemporary red morocco binding.

Handsome autograph inscription from Raymond Radiguet to Léon Daudet: « A monsieur Léon Daudet avec ma profonde admiration. »

Raymond Radiguet fait la connaissance de Léon Daudet par l'entremise de son frère Lucien Daudet, très lié à Jean Cocteau depuis sa jeunesse. Radiguet avait nourri pour Léon Daudet, alors député de Paris et membre de l'Action française, une fervente admiration qui s'était muée, très peu de temps avant son propre décès, en critique acerbe.
L'origine de ce brusque revirement se trouve dans le scandale provoqué par le suicide du fils de Léon Daudet, Philippe, en novembre 1923 : le député, pour sauver son honneur, soutient la thèse d'un assassinat politique par des membres de la Sûreté Générale, à qui il reproche leurs idées républicaines. Radiguet, touché par la mort de l'adolescent, est révolté par l'attitude du père et, dans un mouvement d'humeur, écrit dans son journal : « Léon Daudet. Il est trop protégé par la République. Le déploiement de forces fait autour de lui, non par [les] Camelots du Roi, mais par le Gouvernement. Son assassinat serait peut-être deuil national, mais n'attristerait pas beaucoup ni profondément. Ce qui fait que je ne l'aime plus, c'est qu'on l'aime trop, c'est qu'il est comme les autres hommes politiques - un peu mieux, oui - Léon Daudet, c'est la Troisième République. Charles Maurras est mieux, quoique pas admirable, mais s'il est vulgaire, sa vulgarité est d'une époque antérieure à celle de Léon Daudet. » (RD, Œuvres complètes, Paris, 1993).

Only edition in French of this history which deals with relations between European powers, England in particular, in the second half of the 17th century. L'histoire du temps was an English political gazette on several sheets, the first volume thus contains 30 issues with title page for each issue, from May 15 to November 27, 1689, the whole gathering 150 issues of 12 pages. The periodical appeared in London and Amsterdam, translated from the English of Mercurius Reformatus, or the New Observator.
James Welwood (1652-1727), English physician who reportedly studied at Leiden, became upon his return to London, in 1690, physician to King William III and Queen Mary.
