    First edition. Telliamed constitutes an anagram of Maillet, the author's name. The edition was published by J. Ant. Guers. The work is dedicated to Cyrano de Bergerac.
    Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Spine with raised bands, decorated. Red morocco title label. Skillful restorations, almost invisible to headcaps and bands. Good copy, very fresh.
    In this fictional work, Maillet establishes important theories that he forged through his geological studies in Egypt and in Arabic countries, where he was also able to consult rare manuscripts of scientific theories. He believes that the earth is in fact a star and that it lives according to perpetual cycles that will lead it once again to become similar to the sun. This treatise is, moreover, known for bearing the premises of Darwinian evolutionary theory, with Maillet making the sea the origin of all living beings. Maillet's contemporaries did not admire his materialistic theories, which appear today so avant-garde and revolutionary.
    Maillet was consul general of France in Egypt, and he produced several works on this country whose profound knowledge transformed his vision of the origin of the earth and geological theories.

    Fundamental work on the theory of generation. The conclusions reached by Spallanzani precede those of Pasteur by nearly a century. He notably refutes the theory of spontaneous generation; it is while working on the refutation of this famous concept that Spallanzani discovers the role of spermatozoa and ovaries in mammals, through his observations on external reproduction in frogs; he will moreover be the first to perform artificial insemination in a female dog. The author also demonstrates regeneration in lizards. Senebier translated most of Spallanzani's works into French; he was also a scientist.

    The rare first edition of this revised, commented and annotated edition by Johann Jakob Leu of Josias Simler's major work: "De republica helvetiorum" (1576). With a large folding map of Switzerland by Michael Kauffer after Christoph Weigel. A frontispiece by Fussli, often lacking elsewhere, has not been included with this copy.
    Contemporary half vellum with corners. Smooth spine with title in black ink. Boards rubbed. Some marginal foxing. Map reinforced on verso with old paper. A good copy.
    Hans Jakob Leu was called upon by the publisher David Gessner to revise Simler's edition: De republica helvetiorum. From 1720, Leu gathered a great quantity of information on the regiments of each canton. His initial goal was to continue Simler's work up to 1720 and to complete it in its ancient parts; he made of it a new work, more extensive and solid.

Quérard gives the 1755 edition, the last edition, and remarks: "The various intermediate editions underwent considerable modifications; those of 1699 and 1702 were given by Denis Simon, who added observations on various matters. After the author's death, two manuscript works found among his papers were added, one on the Right of indult; the other on Ecclesiastical jurisprudence". Title page in red and black.

    The Art of Love by Gouge de Cessière is followed by an Idea of Ovid's Art of Love. Naturally inspired directly by Ovid's illustrious eponymous poem, The Art of Love by Gouge de Cessière is a sort of playful banter on seduction and love, advocated as a virtue. The poem enjoyed some success.

An encyclopedic and highly celebrated work, Les recherches de la France stands out among all works of this kind for its radical novelty. Pasquier can be considered the father of modern history, History emerging then as a discipline and departing from legend and literature. Chapter VII, quite different from the others since those focused on research into the Antiquity of France, concerns itself with the formation of the French language; one part is devoted to the Pléiade, of which Pasquier was a member. Chapter VI already dealt with the origin of French poetry. "A unique monument raised to antiquities, the Recherches comprise, through their variety and boldness, everything that a scholar of the 16th century could aspire to."     The interest of this work manifests itself both through its erudition and its accessibility and readability (historical anecdotes...). We owe it to Paul Jacob, who was a great bibliophile, a writer and scholar, and the curator of the Arsenal library. If the entire series has become a great classic in the field, it is because it successfully combines the work of publisher, printer, bookbinder, historian, illustrators, and documentation, and few books have ultimately achieved this amalgamation that we owe to Firmin-Didot, at a time when books had become quite mediocre.

    Half dark green morocco binding with corners signed Niedrée at foot. Spine with raised bands ornately decorated in grotesque style with stylized wavelets. Top edges gilt. Thin split to upper joint at head of volume 1 and at foot of volume 3. 2 corners of volume 3 slightly opened and pushed in. Some rare browning to margins of certain leaves. Handsome copy, uncut.
    39 songs in volume 1, 32 in volume 2, 54 in volume 3, making 125 installments and songs, divided into war songs and patriotic songs, burlesque satirical songs and laments and rondeaux... One of the finest Romantic illustrated works, the material is abundant and rich, full of imagination and verve. This volume is above all one of Trimolet's principal works as an illustrator, whom Baudelaire particularly praises in his Curiosités esthétiques, in the chapter on Caricaturists. Carteret compares this production to the finest illustrated works of the 18th century.

    10 accordion-stitched volumes. Three different printed covers, the first series comprising three volumes, the second four and the third three. Rubbing. Two volumes with worming to upper margin, one wormhole to centre of book touching engravings.
    Numerous scenes of particularly violent combat, with decapitations and gushing blood; Court scenes. The figure of Sadahide is remarkably finely rendered and detailed, the grey and black wash adding contrast and depth.

    Later full cardboard binding, worn: the spine is missing. Paper reinforcement in margin on verso of title page. Corner lack filled at leaf 1-2 in upper margin with small text damage. Some pale dampstains, foxing. Paper browning characteristic of German and Swiss papers of this period.
    Like the Tabula Aurea (golden table) of Bergama for the work of Thomas Aquinas, the Thesaurius Ciceronianus is the indispensable lexicon for reading Cicero's enormous corpus and the essential element for its study, particularly for teaching it. The Renaissance found its great classic in Cicero, it would exhume manuscripts and editions would abound; he is the least contested and most studied Latin author, both by the religious and civil worlds, hence the necessity of this decisive lexicon for the correct reading of his work. "This work, of great utility for understanding Cicero, first appeared under the title Observationes in Ciceronem, ex Prato Albuini (Brixiae), 1535." (Brunet IV-84).

    Very rare signed autograph inscription from Jules Verne to [Achille] Tournier, then Prefect of the Somme.
    Jules Verne settled in Amiens, his wife's birthplace, in 1871: "At my wife's wish I settled in Amiens, a wise city, polished, of even temper, where society is cordial and learned. One is close to Paris, close enough to have its reflection, without the unbearable noise and sterile agitation. And to say everything, my Saint-Michel remains moored at Le Crotoy." His affection for the region would continue to grow and he would never leave the Picard capital, actively participating in local political life. Appointed director of the Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, in 1875 he delivered on this occasion a speech that remained famous: "An Ideal City: Amiens in the Year 2000." In 1888 he was elected to the municipal council of Amiens where he served until 1903. It was the prefect of the Somme who presented him with his decoration when he was promoted to officer of the Legion of Honor in 1892. "People often ask me why I reside in Amiens, I who am so completely Parisian by instinct. Well, because, as I told you, I have Breton blood, and I love tranquility, and I could not be happier than in a cloister. A calm life of study and work brings me joy." (June 1893, in Mac Clure's magazine).
