New edition, the original in six cantos having appeared in 1750, but first illustrated edition with seven unsigned figures; Cohen attributes the frontispiece to Eisen and the figures to Martinet. Contemporary full speckled blonde sheep binding. Smooth spine decorated with a red morocco title label, compartments and small gilt floral fleurons. All edges red. Head worn down, two corners slightly bumped, joints cracked and very skillfully restored at head. The Art of Love by Gouge de Cessière is followed by an Idea of Ovid's Art of Love. Naturally inspired directly by Ovid's illustrious eponymous poem, The Art of Love by Gouge de Cessière is a sort of playful banter on seduction and love, advocated as a virtue. The poem enjoyed some success.
