Melchior Yvan (1803-1873), physician and politician, took part in the mission sent to China under the direction of the diplomat Lagrené, with the aim of concluding a treaty of commerce and navigation with that country. He published his account of the journey in several parts between 1850 and 1855.

This pamphlet appears to be one of the author's very earliest publications relating to China.

First edition of this pioneering work in the history of psychiatry (cf. Garrison & Morton 4920; Semelaigne I, pp. 68-73; Waller records only the 1770 German translation; Wellcome III 547; Blake 277).

It was as part of his philanthropic concerns that Piarron de Chamousset (1717–1773), who in fact practised medicine without holding any formal qualification, sought to establish the first mutual-aid association, comprising a dispensary, medical staff, and premises to accommodate the sick.

This text was later reprinted in the collection Vues d'un citoyen (Paris, Lambert, 1757). By the same author, we also offer following it: "Lettre à l'auteur de la critique du Plan d'une maison d'association".

Very rare essay on feeding bottles by the famous obstetrician Louis-Charles De­neux. He assisted the Duchess of Berry with the birth of the duke of Bordeaux, last legitimate descendant of Louis XV of France in the male line.

Presented before the Paris Academy of Medicine, of which he was a member of the surgical section, at the sessions of 12 and 19 February 1833. Deneux was the nephew and pupil of the famous Baudelocque, from whom he took courses in surgery and childbirth from 1782 to 1789.

A native of the Briançonnais (Villeneuve-la-Salle), like many booksellers who settled beyond the Alps, Yves Gravier established himself in Genoa in the second half of the eighteenth century, first in partnership with Louis Fantin, and subsequently on his own.

His parents Jean, Thomas and Simon Gravier were likewise active in Italy (Thomas in Rome itself).

In 1839, the firm was placed into liquidation.

This work belongs to the first phase of the highly controversial research conducted by the French surgeon of Russian origin, Sergueï Abramovitch Voronoff (1866–1951).

The association of the Lumière brothers’ name with the development of the cinematograph should not obscure the fact that Auguste Lumière (1862–1954) was first and foremost a biologist of distinction.

Having as early as 1895 left the new invention to his brother Louis, he established a laboratory of experimental physiology and pharmacodynamics in order to direct his discoveries toward experimental medicine.

This laboratory became the Lumière Laboratories in Lyon, which he personally directed until October 25th, 1940, when he transferred the presidency of the company to his son, while continuing his research until his death.
