The Genevan physician Jacques-André Matthey (1779-1842) studied medicine in Paris; upon his return to Switzerland, he practised at the Hôpital général from 1805 to 1814 before being appointed medical inspector for Saint-Gervais-les-Bains.

Pinel's influence on his research was considerable; he is credited with coining the concept of kleptomania, which he originally termed "clopémanie".

Presentation inscription by Jacques-André Matthey at the head of the half-title page to Dr Jean-Denis Long (1776- ?), of Die, a local scholar whose collections, subsequently enlarged by his descendants, were transferred to the town museum in 1930.
