Barkow (1798-1873) was professor of anatomy at the University of Breslau. His publications were justly renowned, notably for their illustrations. His correspondence with Darwin is well known. The work deals with the arterial system in mammals.

He provides, in this important work, precise and technical means of instructing the blind and educating them in manual work, reading and music, with the aid of other senses. But above all the book allows for a reconsideration of the status of blind people and social reintegration of individuals previously marginalized by their disability.
