First edition. Illustrated with 4 hand-colored plates and 11 figs. Later half black shagreen binding. Spine with false raised bands. Cold and gilt fillets. Between the title and editorial information, a 3 cm rectangle has been cut out, certainly to remove a bookplate. At foot: Collège de France. 2 library labels on spine. Barkow (1798-1873) was professor of anatomy at the University of Breslau. His publications were justly renowned, notably for their illustrations. His correspondence with Darwin is well known. The work deals with the arterial system in mammals.
