Johann Heinrich Hottinger was a highly esteemed Swiss orientalist, and his numerous works in the field greatly advanced Oriental studies; he was professor of Oriental languages at Zurich and Heidelberg. This first work is followed by an Arabic-Italian dictionary full of numerous expressions and idioms. The third text contains no title page and appears to have been extracted from a journal.

A scientific mind of the Society of Jesus, Sarrabat obtained the gold medal from the academy of sciences in 1728 for his work on the origin of the salinity of the sea, which he attributed primarily to waters flowing into the sea.

This work by Gerard Blaes (1625-1692), Dutch physicist, anatomist (he was the creator of comparative anatomy) and physician who practiced in Amsterdam and was a famous leader in his field, is one of the most celebrated treatises on teratology, the science of monsters.

Thomas Syndenham (1624-1689) was an English physicist and physician, famous for introducing opium, laudanum and morphine into medicine as painkillers and analgesics against pain. The two books by Blaes and Syndenham are medical treatises containing various observations, with the section on monsters appearing after the observations.

Contemporary pamphlet covered with blue paper. Spine reinforced with a second blue paper.
After serving as a military surgeon, Belloste (1654-1730) became surgeon and advisor to the Dowager of Savoy. The treatise is not merely a classical treatise on mercury, it bears witness to the transition from surgical therapeutics to chemical and mercurial therapeutics. Belloste had indeed developed mercury-based pills which were in that era what potable gold had been. The treatise essentially serves promotional purposes and extols the miracle remedy. The manufacture of the pills was continued by his widow and son, as were the new editions.

Contemporary limp vellum binding with overlapping edges. Title (author) in black ink. Some red ink annotations on the endpaper facing the title concerning the book's history. Copy trimmed short on certain pages, notably of the index.
Collection composed of 12 Latin poems on the liberal arts, human existence, and happiness, each corresponding to a sign of the zodiac. Due to the criticisms the book contains about the church and the pope, the 1531 edition was banned and the Inquisition kept a watchful eye on Palingenius's activities, until he was condemned to the stake. The 11th book deals with astronomy, and the 12th sets forth a theory of light that would be partly followed by Giordano Bruno. Marcellus Palingenius is the anagram of Pietro Angelo Manzolli.

First edition. In original wrappers, covered with brown paper torn 2 cm at foot. The scientific mind of the Society of Jesus, R. P. Lozeran du Fech, won for the second time the prize of the Royal Academy of Literature, Sciences and Arts for this dissertation on air which finally seemed to resolve for all the nature of air in a satisfactory manner. After expounding the ancient theories, the author presents his own doctrine on the liquidity of air, its expansion and its weight. His Dissertation on the nature of thunder had previously won the Academy's approval.

One copy at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France from 1628, and another at the British Library. Nothing in French and English union catalogues.

Antonio Maria Spelta (1559-1632) was a writer, scholar and historian from Padua, and it was while recalling Erasmus's Praise of Folly that he wrote this collection composed partly of reflections on madness, and partly on various subjects ranging from astrologers to hunters, including historical anecdotes. The first part tends more towards an eulogy of folly, despite the ever-present satire, while the second part presents a tableau of men and professions prey to madness, whimsy and vanity. Spelta's alert and biting pen perfectly captures the portrait of folly in its every guise. A singular work.

Antoine de La Salle (1754-1829), philosopher and scientist, was certainly one of the most curious thinkers of his time; his ideas, sometimes whimsical and muddled, made him the leader of the physico-moral school. Physiognomy naturally plays an important part in this theory. La Mechanique is both a classical treatise on physiognomy and a new way of considering the relationship between morals and the body from an educational perspective. Beyond this, La Mechanique is also a treatise on understanding and logic; one finds theories on phonetics and linguistics, in short everything that concerns man - moral, intellectual and physical. La Salle led an eventful life, made numerous voyages, visited America and Asia, studied the relationships between Buddhism and Christianity, wrote an unpublished Histoire de la Chine, and learned Arabic. Then, having left the navy, he traversed Europe, living in Spain then in Italy before returning to settle in Paris where he devoted himself to philosophy and the sciences.

English chemist and theologian, who isolated numerous gases, such as oxygen. He is considered one of the founders of modern chemistry through his contributions to experimentation.
Priestley (1733-1804), minister, theologian and chemist, was encouraged to publish his History of Electricity by the scientist and statesman Benjamin Franklin, whom he had met in 1766. Priestley discovered among other things that charcoal conducts electricity. In 1767, he realized that the electrification of conductors remains superficial. The same year, he became minister in Leeds, Yorkshire, where he began to take interest in research in the field of gases. Thanks to his innovative experimental work, he was elected to the Academy of Sciences in 1772, the year he published his Observations on Different Species of Air. His greatest contribution is the isolation of oxygen in 1774.

Metzger (1739-1805) was professor of medicine at Königsberg. This opuscule gathers his studies and experiments on anatomy, physiology and surgery, with the nervous system as the object of study. Notable particularly for the valuable medical bibliography in the footnotes.

The work is anonymous, but the preface leaves no doubt about the book's author; the translator appears to be Abbé Dinouard, who had published an Abrégé de l'Embryologie sacrée in 1775. A very interesting and remarkable reflection on caesarean operations and on the nature of the living in human beings. This is undoubtedly the first time that the foetus, or premature babies, were considered as living beings. It is striking to note that it was religious thought that led to reconsidering embryology through its conception of the living being

Drawing inspiration from the form used by Demoustier in Les Lettres sur la mythologie, Martin proposes an educational work on the sciences; moreover the pedagogical model predates Demoustier, and Martin demonstrates teaching without harshness, elegant.

Barkow (1798-1873) was professor of anatomy at the University of Breslau. His publications were justly renowned, notably for their illustrations. His correspondence with Darwin is well known. The work deals with the arterial system in mammals.

Illustrated with 24 plates depicting blind people engaged in manual work. In original wrappers, under its contemporary pink paper. Lacks to both lower corners. Scattered foxing. The author was in charge of the institute for young blind people in Paris. He provides, in this important work, precise and technical means of instructing the blind and educating them in manual work, reading and music, with the aid of other senses. But above all the book allows for a reconsideration of the status of blind people and social reintegration of individuals previously marginalized by their disability.
