Alessandro Piccolimini (1508-1579) of Siena, was an important Italian humanist of the Renaissance, he was an astronomer, mathematician and philosopher. His astronomical works: Sfera del mondo, Delle stelle fisse, Speculazioni dei pianeti, remained highly celebrated for having proposed the first reading of the world of stars. He also wrote comedies and translated numerous works of the Ancients in his youth. A work of truly humanist philosophy, Della institution morale attempts to define the nature of man in his works, one can distinguish chapters on the social nature of man, on the quest for happiness, on the nature of love, but also chapters on astrology, rhetoric, geography, astronomy, mechanics, as so many productions of human genius. One chapter deals more specifically with Passions at war against reason.
