An illustrious scientist of the French Enlightenment, and a divergent mind compared to the prevailing discourse of French science, Maupertuis's sagacity was exercised in several scientific fields: natural sciences (his hypotheses are very close to natural selection and transformism), biology and genetics of which he was a shrewd precursor, astronomy, with the adoption of Newtonian principles including universal attraction against Descartes's theory of vortices prevalent in France, mathematics, with the principle of least action of which he was one of the first discoverers, cosmology where his voyage to Lapland and the pole proved him right against Cassini (the earth being indeed flatter at the poles)...

Awakened to experimental physics as a student of Abbé Nollet, Sigaud de la Fond assisted the chemist Macquer in his experiments on gases and notably hydrogen, verifying that its combustion produced water. He relates in this work his experiments on different types of air, and summarizes the work of foreign physicists. Rouland, professor of experimental physics at the University of Paris, completed the descriptions of experiments, and the apparatus for conducting these experiments. Most of the chemists and physicists of the period are cited in the work: Priestley, Fontana, Lavoisier...

First and important work on aerostation. It brings together several memoirs relating the first balloon flights (On inflammable gas, Observations made by M. Jeaurat, On rubber, Accounts of the first flights at Annonay, at the Champ de Mars...) Faujas de Saint-Fond, naturalist and geologist, financially supported the research of the Montgolfier brothers, papermakers, based on Cavendish's experiments and Priestley's work on hot air. They flew two balloons at Annonay, the second with farm animals, by means of bags filled with hot air. A supplement containing other memoirs and observations, which is rarely bound with, was published in 1784.

It was in these memoirs that Tremblay discovered the hydra, or hydra, a freshwater polyp which he observed for several years while serving as tutor to the son of a count who owned a property with ponds and streams. He meticulously recounts his observations and experiments with a particularly enlightened mind. After initially taking the hydra for a plant, Tremblay understood that he was dealing with an animal, capable of moving with its tentacles (the horns), and which is photosensitive, instinctively directing itself toward the most luminous point. Through multiple and intelligent experiments, he established that the hydra has the power of regeneration through cell division, and finally that the hydra can reproduce asexually. Tremblay's studies found resonance among his contemporaries, but quickly fell into oblivion, certainly because they competed with those of Réaumur. Modern zoology has rehabilitated the importance of his work and the quality of his experiments.

The Traité de l'aimant is the last work published during the author's lifetime and closes the Histoire naturelle whose edition spanned fifty years, and which enjoyed success comparable to Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopédie. The treatise proper is followed by numerous tables of observations on the inclination of the magnetic needle (with the names of travelers and navigators), in the southern and northern hemispheres, according to different latitudes... The treatise begins with an exposition of magnetic and electric forces.

The rare French first edition, illustrated with 9 folding plates containing 22 figures. The first edition, in Italian, dates from 1765. Two manuscript leaves in fine handwriting are bound at the rear on the properties of gunpowder, with a comparative table of tests for sulphur, saltpetre and charcoal.

Important scientific treatise in the field, whose author was one of the most eminent specialists of his time. Besides being an engineer, Papacino d'Antoni was an artillery officer and director of the royal artillery and engineering school of Turin, and composed various military treatises. In this canonical scientific treatise on the chemistry and physics of gunpowder, the theories and hypotheses advanced by the author are demonstrated through multiple experiments.

Very handsome copy, exceptionally fresh, in an unsigned master binding.

First French edition and the first translation into the vernacular, following the original Latin text published in the Elementa physiologica in eight volumes between 1757 and 1766. Copy with unidentified arms, bearing angular ermine spots on the covers. The Rohan or Rohan Chabot families affixed only the emblems or charges of their heraldry to their books, but we have been unable to identify a family behind the use of ermine spots, as these occur in too many coats of arms.

The first part is a series of advice for successful silkworm breeding; the second consists of observations on the management of silkworms; the last relates a method for harvesting silkworm eggs. Following, a detailed table of the work's contents.

First edition published anonymously in Lyon and not in Amsterdam as stated on the title page. The second edition published on the same date by the same publisher has different pagination and a smaller format (12mo); it should not be confused with the true first edition (64 pp. for ours versus 96 pp. for the other).

This is a pamphlet in which the author attacks and ridicules the principal physicians of the period, and expounds the main features of his materialist doctrine. The book was condemned to be torn and burned by order of Parliament on July 9, 1746. Too often forgotten is that La Mettrie was himself a military physician before being forced to abandon his post and expatriate due to his publications. Through a fiction in which a traveler embarks for China to study medicine and Chinese physicians, a satire of contemporary medicine and its physicians; the work purports to be a translation from Chinese of a great medical manuscript.

All early editions of this text have now become rare.

Our copy presents in the margins, in pen, the "keys" to all the portraits of the supposed Chinese physicians composing the work.

Wolf sought to redefine philosophy as a whole based on a stable principle of knowledge founded on deduction and the model of geometry; a rationalist, he was a disciple of Leibniz from whom he borrowed many concepts. And yet for the first time in the history of philosophy, Wolf conferred an autonomy on psychology that it had never had before, distinguishing between rational psychology and empirical psychology (the translator having chosen the term experimental psychology which would be promoted to a great future in France). Furthermore Wolf perfected the question of symbolism and the relation of the body to sign and representation. The translator, faced with Wolf's incredibly prolix work and the mediocre abridgments he encountered, preferred to follow the author step by step in the construction of his ideas and theses without giving an exhaustive and literal translation that would be barely readable.

Collection of the most important works of this great biologist Spallanzani, remarkable not only for his hypotheses, but for his imagination in terms of experimental method. The opuscules contain the Expériences sur la digestion, which are not found in the original, in which Spallanzani demonstrates the importance of gastric juices in the digestive process. He will also demonstrate that the theory of spontaneous generation is false, discovers the secret of fertilization between a spermatozoid and an ovum, that of regeneration in certain animals; he will perform the first artificial insemination on a female dog. We thus owe him numerous advances in the sciences, whose effects would not be felt until much later, but above all he marks his era through his scientific rigor and demonstration protocols that reveal an inventiveness and clairvoyance that seem inexhaustible.

The work, in the form of an alphabetical dictionary, provides an overview of contemporary knowledge of natural history (mineralogy, botany, zoology, entomology, astronomy, and so on). Each article includes a curious or remarkable aspect of its subject (medical uses, strange properties, characteristics, etc). Several useful tables at end. Handsome.

Commentary by Georg Henisch on the treatise of the sphere by Proclus, the celebrated Neo-Platonic philosopher of the 5^th century. The first part is a Latin translation, with the Greek text on the left, of the treatise of the sphere. This astronomical treatise follows Ptolemy's system and studies the theory of the five climatic zones, seeking to clearly explain astronomical phenomena.

This surprising memoir traces all the curative applications of electricity on man: rheumatism, deafness, toothache, ophthalmia, paralysis, epilepsy. Case descriptions and practical applications. The author additionally provides a most interesting bibliography on the subject. The second part presents the journals of patients who were electrified during the year 1785.

This memoir was originally read to the Academy of Sciences in 1783 and published in the Academy's journal.

Treatise and manual of astronomy and physics with various short treatises, including one on trigonometry. The physics treatise is based on the Newtonian physics lessons that Keill gave at Oxford. A Scottish mathematician and defender of Newton's work, this Oxford professor was one of the first to teach physics and astronomy according to mathematics. The cartographic plates of the Moon were made following the works of Hevelius, Riccioli, Langren who each in their own way catalogued and observed the lunar relief.

A major work on generation and embryology, in which one discovers the hypothesis of chromosomes as well as that of environmental influence. Bonnet perfects his thesis according to which every being exists previously in germ form in nature, thus the embryo already exists in the seminal fluid, and generation is merely the simple development of the germ, which, from small, develops through nutrition; the germ already containing everything that will be developed. Although Bonnet develops the extensions and consequences of this fundamental postulate, this in no way prevents him from penetrating the mysteries of embryology and fertilization. The germ thesis seeming a middle ground between spontaneous generation and procreation, it appears a solution to the theoretical impasse to which spontaneous generation leads, contradicted by observations, in which Bonnet possesses great finesse. Bonnet is not only interested in mammals but extensively in plants and earthworms.

Fundamental work on the theory of generation. The conclusions reached by Spallanzani precede those of Pasteur by nearly a century. He notably refutes the theory of spontaneous generation; it is while working on the refutation of this famous concept that Spallanzani discovers the role of spermatozoa and ovaries in mammals, through his observations on external reproduction in frogs; he will moreover be the first to perform artificial insemination in a female dog. The author also demonstrates regeneration in lizards. Senebier translated most of Spallanzani's works into French; he was also a scientist.

The commission of agriculture and arts was founded in 1794 and Parmentier was from its creation an eminent and influential member. The potato was soon perceived, thanks to Parmentier, as a means to combat famine and food shortages, whether for humans or animals.

Swedish entomologist and military officer who studied under Linnaeus. The Insects of Sweden (Insecta suecica) forms his most important contribution to the discipline; his insect collection was very extensive.

Volumes 1 and 4 each contain, bound at rear, manuscript notes and annotations covering 5½ pages, in a fine and close hand, certainly by the first owner of the work: A. Godart whose name appears at the foot of each volume.

This naturalist from Poitou was well known in scientific circles, and his study is distinguished by its rigorous observation and seriousness. The publisher notes the impossibility of obtaining the first edition, justifying this edition, and quoting Dreux du Radier about the author: "He could serve as a model in this genre, if we did not have the writings... of Réaumur".

This treatise on volcanology concerning the volcanoes of Auvergne is important for the evolution of this science, still young at the time. The author studies precisely how volcanoes changed the landscape, cataloguing lava flows and their effects; tracing centuries of geology, when the sea bordered the volcanoes... Manuscript and bibliographic note in pencil at the bottom of the title page.

First edition, quite rare; a counterfeit edition appeared on the same date in Amsterdam.

Without doubt Bonnet's most ambitious and remarkable study which earned him the designation of father of modern biology. This work of theoretical biology drawing its source from multi-disciplinary reflection and its postulate from Leibniz (the immortality of the soul) claims that the Earth periodically suffers universal catastrophes which destroy almost all life and that the survivors each time rise one degree on the evolutionary scale. Bonnet was the first to use the term evolution in a biological context. The work also prefigures experimental psychology. There would exist in each being germs which pre-exist it and ensure the survival of the species, Bonnet's thesis announcing the theories and discoveries of genes. It was blindness that in Bonnet put a stop to experimentation and engaged him on the path of philosophical reflection.

De rerum inventoribus was placed on the Index and republished in 1575 in an expurgated form, and the edition we present is therefore not expurgated. The first French translation appears to have been published in 1527 according to a copy at the University of Glasgow, although contradictory information gives 1528 as the date of the first French edition in Latin by Robert Estienne. Brunet gives 1499 for the date of the first edition.

Important study devoted to the phenomena of generation, fertilization and embryology, with a description of sexual organs and their function. By establishing a state of contemporary knowledge, Haller refutes certain previously established theses, notably that of Malpighi, and establishes new ones, clarifying the way in which new individuals come into the world.

Du Verney's first work; he was renowned for his knowledge of anatomy and physiology, was tutor to the Dauphin and taught in the Botanical Gardens.

This is the first scientific monograph on the structure of the ear and its illnesses, and is therefore very significant. It played a determining role in the understanding of this organ, whose study had been until then much neglected. Stamp of Doctor Maurice Petit of Montereau.

New edition. The first volume of these Observations appeared in 1719, the second forming the sequel in 1725. In this edition, volume I is from 1730 and the second from 1737. It should be noted that it is extremely rare to find the two volumes together, especially in uniform binding.

Bougeant, famous Jesuit scholar, is the architect of this compilation which borrows articles from periodicals such as the Journal des savans, La Republique des lettres, and other lesser-known publications. The result is a most representative panorama of scientific knowledge. Physics is naturally understood in the broad sense, so one will find, beyond general physics (acoustics, optics...), chapters on chemistry, anatomy, plants and natural science, astronomy. Father Bougeant's selection proves audacious and fascinating, the articles are quite short and maintain curiosity, moving from strange and extraordinary subjects to more classical ones, such as the causes of thunderstorms. The two volumes have the same thematic structure (general physics, chemistry, botany...).

Compilation of several works on glassmaking assembled and translated by Baron d'Holbach (his preface presents the different authors), notably the important treatise by Neri (1612) who first published the method of making colored glass, crystal glass... Neri's work served as the basis and foundation for all books that followed on the same subject. One will note, among the various notes and treatises, that of Henckel on how to use plants in the manufacture of glassware, and the anonymous one on the secrets of true porcelain. Finally, one will distinguish numerous recipes relating to the art of glass, notably that of cobalt blue, but also concerning metals, with the method of gilding iron, copper, silver, bronzing, the way to produce colors, to dye a reddish horse black...
