First edition containing 5 folding plates. Contemporary binding in full speckled brown sheep, spine with five raised bands decorated with gilt compartments and fleurons as well as a red morocco title-label, board edges ruled with gilt, all edges red. Head-cap absent, tail-cap partially missing, bands rubbed, upper joint of front board cracked for 2.5cm, corners bumped. The two largest plates show tears without loss. Long manuscript note from the 19th century on front pastedown extending onto a small part of first endpaper. Bookplate from a La Rochelle library, also 19th century, on title page. First publication concerning the moving sphere of Pigeon and Delure who here sign the dedication to Louis XIV. The king acquired the first armillary sphere of their manufacture the previous year; it is one of the first to be based on Copernicus's heliocentric system.
