First edition. Contemporary full root-grained sheep binding, ca. 1930. Jansenist spine with raised bands. Author and title gilt. Spine uniformly sunned. Although the author criticizes any philosophical vision, he seeks to demonstrate only one thing concerning sensibility, that a vital fluid is at the origin of life and sensibility. The demonstration consists of a long review of all scientific work and theories on the subject (blood circulation, brain). Through his thesis, the author reconciles the materialism of the body with idealism, a force presiding over all things—this is vitalism, a thesis found in Hippocrates, whom the author defends against contemporary medicine, and in Aristotle.
