Born into a Dutch Jewish family, Benjamin Cohen (1818–1852) adopted an Anglicised pseudonym in order to facilitate his business dealings, passing himself off as a London practitioner holding a degree from the University of Edinburgh, where he claimed to have been "admitted" in 1833. In reality, he had undertaken no formal studies.

The work discusses the transformist hypothesis. A native of the Upper Palatinate, Franz Ignaz Pruner (1808-1882), known as Pruner-Bey following his years in Egypt, returned to Europe in 1860 and settled in Paris, where he devoted himself to anthropological studies.

The subject of this dissertation does not, of course, concern the State of the same name (a member of the Confederacy during the Civil War), but the vessel, the CSS Alabama, a sloop of war with combined steam and sail propulsion, built in Great Britain in 1862. He also developed a keen interest in ancient metrology, on which he published several monographs.
