Cervantes' last work completed 4 days before his death and published posthumously in 1617. In his epistle, Cervantes declares he had never written anything better. The novel is a sort of rewriting of Heliodorus's Latin novel: The Aethiopica, but Cervantes placed his heroes in the north and each of the trials of the separated couple takes place in a spiritual and Christian journey. This work would not have many editions over the centuries, eclipsed by the success of Don Quixote.

Swiss author born in Lausanne, the author devoted himself to a literary career after leaving the army, he made his name from 1783 with 3 sentimental and epistolary novels, then in vogue, which we find in Baculard d'Arnaud and whose origin goes back to Richardson. His 3 novels enjoyed a certain renown, in France and in Switzerland. Camille is a novel where psychological analysis plays a major role, we see the romantic journey of two friends who are complete opposites, one is thoughtful and reasoning, melancholic, the other prides herself on simplicity and gaiety and sees no interest in reflection. The most loving will not be the one we think. The work is interesting not only because we follow the character of two young girls and their sentimental adventures but because it exposes the condition and life of educated young girls at the end of the 18th century.

Illustrated edition with first printing of a title vignette, 140 half-page vignettes, all by Tony Johannot, engraved by Brevière. Moorish-style bandeaux and drop capitals. Text framed with a double black fillet.
The original frontispiece has been replaced by an original signed watercolor by Adolphe Lalauze (1838-1906) for an illustration of Le Diable boiteux, and an original ink drawing by the painter and illustrator Henri Pille (1844-1897), dedicated to his friend Dr. Laffont and dated May 3, 1896. Furthermore, the copy has been enhanced with 9 etchings engraved by Louis Monziès after drawings by Henri Pille for the Lemerre edition of 1879, in two states, on vellum before letters and on chine before letters (the 9 proofs on chine bear Pille's autograph signature); and with a portrait of the author and 7 etchings by Adolphe Lalauze for the Jouaust edition of 1880, before letters on laid paper (each proof has been signed in red by the artist). Copy assembled by Dr. Laffont, dedicatee of Henri Pille's drawing, who noted in his hand the list of added pieces opposite the cover. The binding was also executed at his request by Charles Meunier in 1899.
Full lavender morocco binding signed Charles Meunier at the bottom of the pastedown (with morocco-edged slipcase). Spine with raised bands decorated with 2 tools and the same mirrored in the center. Covers with a wide frame repeating the motif used on the spine. Decorative border frame inside on the pastedowns. Edges gilt. Covers and spine preserved. Some pale foxing only from p. 304 to 312. Traces of rubbing to joints and headcaps. Some offsetting from the engravings.

Contemporary signed full brown marbled calf binding by René Kieffer, with his label at top of first endpaper. Raised band spine decorated with 2 diamond shapes with stylized foliage panel in blind. Boards decorated with 2 large panels with alternating foliage in blind, one darker brown, the other lighter. The spine and edges are lighter, only the panels and tools are dark brown. Minor rubbing. Some occasional foxing on an otherwise fresh set.
Superb Art Deco binding by Kieffer. This binding has already been used on several copies of this edition (generally on first paper copies), so it is likely a publisher's commission for this work.
